Just want Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih - Indonesian?
My name is Bawang Putih, and my story flows like the river that ran past my childhood home in a green, sun-drenched village in old Java. The water was my only friend after my mother passed away and my world was filled with the sharp words of my stepmother and the jealous glares of my stepsister, Bawang Merah. They said my name, which means 'garlic,' suited my plainness, while Bawang Merah, or 'red onion,' was as fiery and important as her name suggested. But the river knew my heart, and it was there that my fate would be decided in the tale you may know as Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih. The river saw my quiet suffering, but it also carried a secret that would change everything.
My days began before the sun, with a list of chores as long as the river itself. While Bawang Merah slept soundly, I was sweeping, scrubbing, and cooking for the entire household. My stepmother’s voice was a constant storm cloud, finding fault in every task I completed. "Is this how you wash the floors? I can still see a speck of dust!" she would shriek. My only moments of peace were spent by the river, where the gentle murmur of the water soothed my weary spirit. One sweltering afternoon, as I was carefully washing my stepmother’s favorite crimson scarf, the fabric, as bright as a hibiscus flower, was suddenly snatched by the powerful current. Panic seized me like an icy grip. I knew the punishment for losing her prized possession would be severe. With a heart pounding against my ribs, I began my desperate journey downstream, my eyes scanning the swirling water for any sign of that unforgiving red.

My search led me far from my village, into a dense part of the forest where the trees whispered ancient secrets to one another. The air grew cool and misty, and I heard the sound of cascading water. There, tucked behind a shimmering waterfall, was a cave. An old woman with a face as wrinkled as a dried leaf sat at its entrance, the lost crimson scarf folded neatly in her lap. Her eyes were kind but piercing, as if she could see the worries I carried inside me. "I will return your scarf," she said, her voice like rustling leaves, "but first, you must help me with my chores for the day." Though I was exhausted and anxious to return home, I agreed without hesitation. I swept the cave floor until it was spotless, cooked a simple but warm meal from roots and herbs, and gently massaged the old woman's tired feet, never once complaining about the work.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows through the forest, the old woman smiled. "You have a kind and patient heart, child," she said, handing me the pristine scarf. "As a reward for your help, you may also take one of these pumpkins." She pointed to a corner of the cave where two pumpkins sat. One was enormous and magnificent, its orange skin glowing in the dim light. The other was small, humble, and plain. My stepmother’s voice echoed in my head, telling me I was worthless, and I felt I didn’t deserve the grander prize. Thinking only of not being a burden, I chose the smaller one. I thanked the old woman profusely and hurried home. My stepmother and Bawang Merah were furious at my lateness until I was told to cut the pumpkin for dinner. When I split it open, their anger turned to gasps of astonishment. Instead of pulp and seeds, it was filled to the brim with shimmering gold coins, sparkling diamonds, and radiant jewels.
The sight of such treasure ignited a fire of greed in my stepmother and Bawang Merah. They quickly devised a plan. The very next day, Bawang Merah deliberately threw her own scarf into the river and followed the same path to the old woman’s cave. When the old woman asked for her help, Bawang Merah sighed and grumbled through every task. She scrubbed the floor with a sour expression and complained that the work was beneath her. When offered the choice of pumpkins, Bawang Merah greedily snatched the largest one without a word of thanks and dragged it home. She and her mother bolted the door, their eyes wide with anticipation of the riches they were about to possess. With trembling, eager hands, they split the giant pumpkin open. But instead of treasure, a terrifying swarm of poisonous snakes, scorpions, and centipedes slithered out, their fangs and stingers poised to strike. Screaming in terror, the two fled the house and were never seen in our village again.
With their cruelty and greed leading to their own downfall, I was finally free. My story of quiet strength and kindness spread throughout the land, eventually reaching the ears of a handsome prince. He was captivated not by my newfound wealth, but by the goodness of my character, and soon after, we were married. This tale has been told for generations in Indonesia, a reminder that true beauty lies within. It teaches us that while cruelty and greed lead to a bitter end, a heart full of kindness and humility can unearth the most brilliant treasures. The story of Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih continues to inspire us, a timeless lesson that the choices we make, whether big or small, define our destiny and encourage us all to choose kindness.
