The story

The Clever Queen and the Founding of Carthage

The warm sun of my home, the great city of Tyre, felt far away as our ships sailed across the sparkling blue sea. My name is Dido, and I was leading my people to find a new home, a safe place where we could build a new life. We sailed for many days and nights, with only the stars to guide us, until we spotted a beautiful coastline with sandy beaches and green hills. This new land was full of promise, but I knew we would have to be brave and clever to make it our own. This is the story of how a tricky challenge led to the founding of my magnificent city, the myth of the Founding of Carthage.

When we landed, we met the local ruler, a king named Iarbas. I asked him if we could buy some land to build our city. The king smiled and made a strange offer. He said I could have as much land as I could cover with the hide of a single ox. My people were worried. An oxhide isn't very big! How could we build a whole city on such a tiny patch of ground? But I saw a puzzle where they saw a problem. I asked for the largest oxhide they had and a very sharp knife. I spent the whole night carefully cutting the hide, not into pieces, but into one single, super-long, noodle-thin strip.

The next morning, we took the long, leathery ribbon to a tall hill overlooking the sea. My people and I worked together, stretching the strip all the way around the base of the hill. It was long enough to circle the entire thing! King Iarbas was amazed by my clever solution. He had never seen anyone solve a problem in such a smart way. True to his word, he gave us all the land inside the circle. On that very hill, we began to build our new home. We named it Carthage, and it grew into one of the most beautiful and powerful cities in the ancient world, with bustling markets and strong walls to keep everyone safe.

For thousands of years, people have told my story to show that being clever can be more powerful than being strong. The myth of Carthage reminds everyone that even when a problem seems impossible, a creative idea can change everything. Artists have painted pictures of me and my city, and writers have shared my tale in books. My story lives on, inspiring children and grown-ups to think in new ways, to be brave leaders, and to believe that with a little bit of imagination, you can build something wonderful that will be remembered forever.
