The story

The Mead of Poetry

Deep inside a cold, stone mountain, where the sunlight never touches, I have a very important job. My name is Gunnlod, and I am a giantess who guards a magical treasure. It isn't gold or jewels, but something much more special: three enormous cauldrons filled with a glowing, bubbling liquid. This is the Mead of Poetry, and just one sip can turn anyone into the world's best storyteller or singer. My father, the giant Suttungr, trusts only me to keep it safe here in our mountain home, Hnitbjorg. For a long time, it was just me and the quiet hum of the mead, but I always wondered if its magic would ever be shared. This is the story of how that happened, the myth of The Mead of Poetry.

One day, a stranger found his way into our secret mountain hall. He was not a giant like me, but a traveler with a twinkle in his eye who called himself Bolverk. My father had hired him, and he was very clever and charming. He told me stories of the world outside, of the sun and the stars and the green earth. I had been lonely for so long, and his words were like music. He said he longed for just a small taste of the magical mead. He promised me that if I let him have three small sips, he would stay and keep me company for three whole days. I thought it was a fair trade, so I agreed. He leaned over the first cauldron and took a long sip. Then he went to the second and drank it all down. Before I could stop him, he had drained the third cauldron, too. The magic of the mead was now all inside him.

In a flash, the traveler changed. He wasn't Bolverk anymore; he was the great god Odin. He turned into a mighty eagle and burst out of the mountain, flying toward Asgard, the home of the gods. As he soared through the sky, he was chased by my furious father. In his haste, Odin spilled a few precious drops of the mead. They fell from the heavens like rain, scattering all over the world of humans below. Those drops were the reason people can write beautiful poems, sing wonderful songs, and tell amazing stories. Even though I was tricked, I know the magic wasn't truly stolen. It was set free. Every time you hear a fantastic story or a catchy song, you are enjoying a tiny drop of the magic I once guarded deep inside my mountain. The Mead of Poetry now belongs to everyone, inspiring people to dream, create, and share their imagination with the world.
