Just want Hermes?
Whoosh! Did you see that? That was me! My name is Hermes, and I have special sandals with wings that help me zip and zoom across the sky like a shooting star. I live way up high on Mount Olympus with all the other gods and goddesses, and it’s my job to deliver their messages. But before I was the fastest messenger, I was a very clever baby, and I want to tell you about the time I played a little trick. This is the story of how I invented a beautiful instrument and made a new friend, a myth the ancient Greeks told called Hermes and Apollo's Cattle.
One sunny morning, when I was just one day old, I peeked out of my cozy cradle. I saw my big brother Apollo’s herd of shiny, white cows munching on sweet green grass. A playful idea popped into my head! I quietly tiptoed out and led the cows away to a secret cave. To make it a super tricky puzzle, I had them walk backward so their footprints pointed the wrong way! It was so silly. When Apollo came to check on his cows, they were all gone. He looked and looked, but the funny footprints just confused him.
Our father, the great god Zeus, saw everything from his throne in the sky. With a gentle smile, he helped Apollo find me and the hidden cows. I knew it was time to make things right. I had found a tortoise shell and made something special: the very first lyre! I plucked its strings, and it made the most beautiful, happy music. I gave the lyre to Apollo as a gift. He loved it so much that he wasn't mad anymore, and we became the best of friends. From that day on, Apollo played beautiful music on his lyre, and I became the messenger of the gods. This story shows how a clever idea and a kind heart can turn a trick into a treat. Even today, people see my picture with winged sandals on mail trucks and shoes, reminding them of the speedy, clever messenger who loved a good adventure.
