The story

Hou Yi and the Ten Suns

My name is Hou Yi, and I was once known as the greatest archer in all the heavens. I remember a time when the world below was not balanced, when the very air crackled with heat and the earth groaned in agony. In those ancient days, the Jade Emperor had ten sons, who were ten suns, and their duty was to take turns lighting up the sky. But the sun-princes were young and mischievous; one day, they decided it would be great fun to rise all at once. This is the story of how I saved the world, the myth of Hou Yi and the Ten Suns. The story begins on a scorched Earth. The ten suns blazed together, their combined heat boiling the seas, cracking the fields, and withering the forests. People huddled in caves, their crops turned to dust, and monsters, driven mad by the heat, emerged from the shadows to terrorize them. The mortal ruler, Emperor Yao, prayed desperately for a hero. The Jade Emperor, seeing the chaos his sons had caused, knew he had to act. He summoned me, Hou Yi, and gifted me a magnificent red bow and a quiver of white arrows. My task was clear: I was to descend to Earth and discipline his sons, to restore order and save humanity from certain destruction.

Descending from the heavens, the wave of heat that hit me was like a physical blow. The suffering of the people was a heavy weight on my heart. My beloved wife, Chang'e, stood by my side, her face etched with worry but her eyes filled with trust. I knew I could not fail. I traveled to the highest peak of Kunlun Mountain, the closest point to the fiery suns. The rock beneath my feet was hot enough to melt metal, and the air shimmered violently. Taking a deep breath, I drew my bow. The string felt cool and steady in my hands, a stark contrast to the burning world around me. I nocked the first arrow, aimed at the proudest of the ten suns, and let it fly. The arrow streaked across the sky like a comet, striking the sun with a deafening boom. The fiery orb exploded into a shower of golden feathers, and a giant, three-legged crow fell from the sky. One sun was gone. A wave of relief, however small, washed over the land. But nine remained. One by one, I took aim. Each shot was precise, each arrow finding its mark. With every sun that fell, the world cooled slightly. The winds began to stir, the rivers stopped boiling, and the people dared to peek out from their shelters, their faces filled with awe and hope. I shot down eight more suns, each one falling as a three-legged crow, until only one remained in the sky.

As the ninth sun fell, balance was restored. The single remaining sun provided the perfect amount of light and warmth. The earth began to heal, and humanity celebrated me as their savior. Emperor Yao offered me endless riches, but I wanted only to return to the heavens with Chang'e. However, the Jade Emperor was furious. While I had saved the world, I had also killed nine of his sons. As punishment, he banished Chang'e and me from the heavens forever, forcing us to live as mortals. My greatest triumph became my deepest sorrow. This myth was first told around campfires and in villages across ancient China to explain the natural order of the world—why there is only one sun in the sky. It taught lessons about balance, responsibility, and the consequences of one's actions, even heroic ones. Today, the story of Hou Yi inspires courage and reminds us that true heroism often involves great personal sacrifice. It lives on in art, from intricate paintings to epic films, and is deeply connected to the Mid-Autumn Festival, which celebrates family reunion and the moon, where my beloved Chang'e eventually found her home. This ancient tale continues to spark our imagination, connecting us to a time of gods and heroes and teaching us that even in our darkest moments, a single act of courage can bring back the light.
