The story

The Guardian of the Green

My name is Mateo, and my home is a small village nestled right at the edge of the great Colombian forest. Every morning, I woke to the chattering of monkeys and the sweet, heavy scent of damp earth and wild orchids. The jungle was my backyard, a world of endless green that I loved more than anything. But I confess, I didn't always understand that loving something also means respecting it. By the fire at night, my abuela would weave stories with her words, tales of the forest’s powerful guardian. She spoke of a spirit who protected every leaf, every creature, and every winding river from those who would do them harm. I would listen, but I thought they were just stories. This is the myth of La Madremonte, and I soon learned she was more real than I could ever have imagined.

One afternoon, feeling particularly bold, I decided to ignore my grandmother’s warnings. A magnificent blue morpho butterfly, its wings like shimmering pieces of the sky, fluttered just beyond the familiar path, and I was determined to catch it. "Just a little farther," I told myself, plunging deeper into the trees. But the forest is clever. Suddenly, the brilliant sun was swallowed by a thick, grey fog that rolled in without a sound. The chattering monkeys and chirping birds fell silent. The path I thought I knew had completely vanished. Have you ever felt a silence so deep it feels like the world is holding its breath? That’s what it was like. A chill of fear crept up my spine, and I felt a thousand unseen eyes watching me from the shadows. Then, she appeared. From the ancient trees, a figure emerged, a woman whose skin was moss and whose hair was a tangle of vines and leaves. Her arms were long, gnarled branches, and her eyes, deep within her leafy face, glowed like hot embers. It was La Madremonte. She said nothing. She didn't have to. The wind began to howl around me, a sorrowful, warning sound, and the trees themselves seemed to shift and groan, their branches interlocking to block any way out. I was trapped in a green labyrinth. In that moment, I understood. She wasn't an angry monster. She was the forest itself, showing me the consequence of my carelessness, of treating her powerful, living home like it was just my playground.

Standing before her, I was no longer a bold boy, but a small, humbled one. My voice trembled as I spoke aloud to the silent guardian. "I'm sorry," I whispered, the words lost in the wind. "I'm so sorry. I promise I will always respect you. I will only take what I need, and I will teach everyone I know to care for this forest." As my vow hung in the misty air, a miracle happened. The dense fog began to thin, swirling away like smoke. A single, golden beam of sunlight pierced through the canopy above, illuminating a perfectly clear path leading straight back toward my village. I looked up at La Madremonte one last time. Her glowing ember eyes seemed to soften, holding a glimmer of acceptance before she turned and melted back into the trees, becoming one with the jungle again. I didn't walk back; I ran. I burst out of the woods not with a scary story of a monster, but with the incredible truth of a powerful protector. La Madremonte is the spirit of nature, a guardian ensuring that the delicate balance of her home is kept safe. Her legend reminds us all to protect our precious forests, a lesson that inspires us to see the magic in the wild world and have the courage to defend it.
