The story

The Empress and the Magical Thread

Once upon a time, in a beautiful land with big gardens, lived an empress named Leizu. She loved to sit in her garden under the tall, green mulberry trees. This is the legend of the Discovery of Silk. One warm afternoon, Leizu was sipping a cup of hot tea when a tiny surprise fell from a branch above. Plop! A little white cocoon landed right in her teacup. It was small and puffy and white. Leizu looked at the little oval shape floating in her tea. She wondered what it could be.

Leizu carefully picked the little cocoon out of her cup. Her warm tea had made it soft. As she held the soft cocoon, she saw a tiny, shiny thread. It had come loose. Leizu was very curious. She gently pinched the end of the thread and started to pull. The thread was so thin, but it was strong. It did not break. It unwound and unwound, shimmering in the bright sun. The thread was so long. It was longer than her arm. It was longer than the whole garden path. Wow. The whole cocoon was made of one single, magical thread. Leizu looked up at the mulberry tree and saw many, many more cocoons.

Leizu was so excited. She ran to show the Emperor the amazing, shiny thread. What a wonderful gift from the tree. Leizu had a great idea. She gathered more cocoons and learned how to weave the long threads together. She made a soft, smooth, and shining cloth. This beautiful new cloth was called silk. It was a wonderful gift for the world. My, what a surprise from a tiny cocoon in a cup of tea. It shows how a little moment of wonder can create something beautiful for everyone.
