The story

Leizu and the Discovery of Silk

Hello there! My name is Leizu, and a very long time ago, I was an empress in a beautiful land that would one day be called China. My favorite place was my garden, filled with sweet-smelling flowers and shady mulberry trees where I loved to sit. One sunny afternoon, I was sipping a warm cup of tea under my favorite mulberry tree, watching the leaves dance in the breeze. I felt so peaceful, but I had no idea that a tiny surprise was about to change everything, not just for me, but for the whole world. This is the story of how I discovered a magical thread, and it is known as the Myth of Leizu and the Discovery of Silk.

As I lifted my cup for another sip, plop! Something small and fuzzy fell from the mulberry tree right into my hot tea. I peered inside and saw a little oval-shaped pod, a cocoon, floating in the liquid. I was curious, so I picked it up with my fingers. The hot tea had softened it, and as I gently pulled, a thread started to come away from the cocoon. But it wasn’t just any thread! It was incredibly long, surprisingly strong, and it shimmered in the sunlight like a tiny rainbow. I kept pulling and pulling, and the single, beautiful thread just kept coming. I looked up at the mulberry tree and saw that its leaves were covered with little worms munching away, and there were many more cocoons hanging from the branches. I realized that these little creatures were the master weavers of this amazing thread. I gathered more cocoons and learned how to carefully unwind them. I discovered that I could twist the threads together to make them even stronger. An idea sparked in my mind: what if I could weave this shiny thread into cloth?

I worked for many days, teaching myself how to raise the silkworms and how to use a loom to weave the threads together. The result was a fabric so soft and light it felt like a cloud, and it glowed with a beautiful sheen. We called it silk. I showed my husband, the great Yellow Emperor, and all our people how to make it. Soon, our land became famous for this wonderful cloth. For thousands of years, silk was a special treasure, and travelers journeyed on a famous path called the Silk Road to trade for it, sharing our discovery with people in faraway places. Even today, people all over the world love silk for its beauty and softness. And it all started on an ordinary afternoon with a curious mind and a little cocoon that fell into my tea. My story reminds us that if you look closely at the world around you, you might find something amazing hidden in the smallest of places.
