The story

Lelawala: The Maid of the Mist

Do you hear that roaring sound? It’s the voice of the great Niagara Falls, and it’s my home. My name is Lelawala, and I live in the heart of the tumbling, splashing water, in a cave hidden behind a watery curtain. Long ago, my people, the Seneca, lived in a village near this mighty river. After my husband passed away, a great sadness fell over me, and my heart felt as heavy as a stone. I felt as lost as a single leaf floating on the big water. This is the famous story of how I stopped being just Lelawala and became the Maid of the Mist.

My sadness was like a gray cloud that followed me everywhere. Nothing made me smile. One day, I walked to the riverbank and saw my small canoe bobbing in the water. I decided I didn't want to feel sad anymore, so I stepped inside and pushed away from the shore. I didn't even use a paddle. I just let the strong, fast river carry me. The water pulled my canoe closer and closer to the giant waterfall. The roaring grew louder, like a thousand drums beating at once, and a cool mist sprayed my face. I closed my eyes, ready for the big drop. But just as my canoe tipped over the edge, two powerful arms reached out from the mist and caught me. It wasn't scary at all. A kind face looked at me, and he gently lifted me and my canoe out of the water. His name was Heno, the Thunder God. He brought me to his secret home, a cozy, dry cave hidden right behind the crashing water. Inside, he showed me something terrible. "Look," he said, pointing into the deep water. At the bottom of the river, a giant, horned serpent was slithering in the dark. It was poisoning the water and making my people sick. Even worse, Heno told me the monster planned to crawl out of the river and destroy my whole village.

Heno looked at me with serious eyes. "You are the only one who can save them, Lelawala," he told me. Suddenly, my sadness was gone, replaced by a feeling of courage. I had a very important job to do. I knew I had to be brave. Heno helped me return to my village. I ran to the elders and shouted, "We are in danger. A giant serpent is coming to destroy our homes." I told them everything I had seen. Because they trusted me, my people listened. Everyone worked together quickly, packing their things and moving the entire village to a safer place on higher ground, far from the river. Just as we finished, the giant serpent, furious that its meal was gone, crawled from the river. But Heno was ready. From the clouds, he hurled a blazing thunderbolt right at the monster. With a mighty crash, the serpent fell. Its enormous body got stuck in the river, creating the beautiful, curved shape we now call the Horseshoe Falls.

My heart was no longer heavy with sadness. I had found my purpose and saved my people. I chose to go back to Heno's home behind the waterfall to help him protect the river. Now, my spirit lives here forever as a guardian of the falls. People say you can hear my voice in the constant roar of the water and feel my presence in the cool, swirling mist. My story, the legend of the Maid of the Mist, is a story about being brave and protecting the people you love. So, when you visit Niagara Falls and see the mist rising like a cloud, you can remember me.
