The story

Mama Ocllo and the Golden Staff

My name is Mama Ocllo. I remember a time, long, long ago, when the world was filled with shadows and chilly air. People huddled in caves, not knowing how to build warm homes or grow yummy food from the earth. My brother, Manco Cápac, and I came from the sparkling waters of Lake Titicaca, a special place that shimmered like a jewel. Our father, the great sun god Inti, sent us on a very important adventure. This is the story of our journey, the myth of the founding of the Inca Empire. Our father gave us a beautiful golden staff that glowed with his light. He said, “Travel across the land. Find the one special spot where this staff sinks into the ground with just one gentle push.” That place, he told us, would be the heart of a new city, a home for a great kingdom filled with sunshine and happiness.

With the golden staff gleaming in our hands, Manco Cápac and I began our long journey. We walked over tall, craggy mountains and through deep, green valleys. Everywhere we stopped, we tested the soil, but the staff only bounced off the hard ground. It was frustrating, but we knew our mission was important. Along the way, we met many people who lived in the wild. They were dressed in scratchy leaves and animal skins, and they looked at us with curious eyes. We wanted to help them. Manco Cápac gathered the men and showed them how to use tools to plow the fields. He taught them to plant seeds for delicious corn and potatoes. I gathered the women and showed them a secret I knew: how to spin the soft wool from llamas into strong thread. Then, I taught them to weave the thread into warm clothes and cozy blankets. I also showed them how to build sturdy houses from stone and cook tasty meals for their families. After many moons passed, we arrived in a perfect valley where the ground was rich and dark. Manco Cápac held the staff high. “Could this be the place?” he whispered. He pushed it into the earth, and with a soft sound, it sank all the way in and disappeared. Our hearts leaped with joy. We had found it.

Right on that sacred spot, we started building our city. We called it Cusco, which means ‘the navel of the Earth,’ because it was the center of our new world. It grew into a magnificent capital city for our people, the Inca Empire. Manco Cápac and I became the first rulers, not like bosses, but like teachers. We taught everyone how to live together with kindness, to share their work, and to build a strong and happy community. For hundreds of years, this story was told by grandparents to their grandchildren around crackling fires. It explained where the Inca people came from and why Cusco was so special. Even today, the myth of our journey inspires people. You can see paintings of me and my brother in Peru, and watch dancers in colorful costumes act out our story in big festivals. It is a beautiful tale that reminds everyone how a great civilization was born from a single journey guided by our father, the sun.
