The story

The Whispers of Pachamama

My name is Anka, and I live where the clouds kiss the mountaintops. Our village is nestled high in the Andes, where the air is crisp and the sky is a brilliant blue. Every morning, I help my papa lead our llamas to graze on the green slopes, and I can feel the whole world breathing around me. It’s a secret whisper that comes from the ground itself, a feeling of being held and cared for by our great Earth Mother. This is the story of Pachamama.

Pachamama isn't just the dirt under our feet; she is the living heart of the world. My grandmother says she is in the strong mountains that watch over us, the cool water that trickles down from the glaciers, and the rich soil where we plant our potatoes and corn. She gives us everything we need to live. In return, we show her our love and respect. Before we take a drink from the stream, we spill a few drops on the ground for her first. When Papa plants a new field, he buries a special offering, like a pretty shell or a sweet coca leaf, as a thank you gift to Pachamama. We believe that if we are kind to the Earth, she will be kind to us. It is a promise between us and the land. These traditions are called 'pagos a la tierra,' or payments to the Earth, and they are our way of saying we remember she is alive and that we are grateful for her gifts. It’s not a big, loud ceremony, but a quiet, daily thank you.

Grandmother says this belief is as old as the mountains themselves. For thousands of years, the people of the Andes have lived by this simple truth: take care of the Earth, and she will take care of you. The story of Pachamama wasn't written in a book; it was passed down from parents to children through songs, actions, and whispers on the wind. It taught our ancestors how to live in harmony with the world around them. Today, the story of Pachamama continues to inspire people far beyond our mountains. Artists paint her with mountains for a body and rivers for hair. Farmers still give thanks for their harvests. And people all over the world are reminded that our planet is a precious, living home that needs our care. The myth of Pachamama helps us imagine a world where we are all part of one big family, connected to the Earth and to each other, sharing her gifts with gratitude and love.
