The story

The Legend of the Two Volcanoes

In a beautiful green valley, under a big blue sky, lived a brave warrior. His name was Popocatépetl. He was tall and strong. He loved the kind Princess Iztaccíhuatl with his whole heart. He loved her more than all the bright flowers in the fields. This is their story, the legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.

One day, Popocatépetl had to go away to a big battle. He promised his princess he would come back soon. While he was far away, another warrior told a lie. He was not a nice warrior. He told Princess Iztaccíhuatl that her brave Popocatépetl was gone forever. This made the princess so, so sad. Her heart felt very heavy, and she fell into a deep, deep sleep. When Popocatépetl came home, he saw his princess sleeping. His heart broke. He gently picked her up in his strong arms. He carried her up a tall mountain, up where the fluffy white clouds could kiss her face.

He made a soft bed of pretty flowers for her on the mountain top. He knelt down beside her and held a glowing torch. The torch was bright and warm, like a small sun, to keep her safe. The great gods high in the sky saw their big, true love. They wanted them to be together forever and ever. So they turned them into two giant mountains, standing side-by-side. Iztaccíhuatl is the mountain that looks like a sleeping lady. Popocatépetl is the smoking mountain right next to her, his torch still burning bright with fire. His love keeps her warm, forever and always.
