My fins shimmered like a thousand emeralds under the water, and my home was the cool, flowing Vistula River. For a long time, my life was filled with happy songs as I swam near a tiny fishing village. My name is Syrenka, and I loved to watch the fishermen cast their nets under the warm sun. One day, a rich merchant heard my singing, but he didn't hear the joy in it; he only heard the sound of gold coins. This is the story of the Warsaw Mermaid, and how I went from being a carefree singer to a city's fierce protector. The merchant was a greedy man, and he wanted my beautiful voice all for himself. He plotted a sneaky plan. He cast a special, strong net into the river, and before I knew it, I was tangled up and pulled from my watery home. The air felt strange and dry. He carried me away from the river, and my heart felt as heavy as a stone. He locked me in a dark, smelly wooden shed, planning to show me off at the market fair like some kind of strange animal. My heart was completely broken, my voice fell silent, and all I could do was dream of the feeling of the cool water on my tail.
From inside the dark shed, I could only cry quiet, salty tears that reminded me of the sea. But my sobs did not go unheard. A young fisherman's son, who had often sat on the riverbank to listen to my happy songs, heard my sad sounds. He peeked through a crack in the wooden wall and saw me trapped inside. He knew in his heart that it was very wrong to keep a wild, free creature in a cage. He felt a powerful urge to do something brave. So, he gathered his friends, and together they whispered and made a courageous plan. Late that night, when a bright silver moon was the only lamp in the sky, they crept to the merchant's shed. They moved as quietly as little mice tiptoeing past a sleeping cat. With a soft click, the fisherman’s son opened the lock and his friends helped carry me out of the dusty, stuffy building. They rushed me back to the river's edge and gently placed me in the water. Oh, the wonderful joy of feeling my home all around me again. I splashed my powerful tail, sending sparkling drops high into the air, and dived deep into the cool, dark river. But I would never forget the kindness I was shown. I swam right back to the young fisherman and his friends, my heart overflowing with gratitude. 'You saved me,' I said, my voice finally clear and strong again. 'For your courage and your good hearts, I make this promise: I will protect your village and all who live here forever. If ever you are in danger, I will rise from the water with my sword and shield to defend you.'

That small fishing village didn't stay small for long. It grew and grew, house by house and street by street, becoming the big, beautiful city of Warsaw. And I always, always kept my promise. From that day on, I became its guardian, watching over all of its people from the cool waters of the Vistula. The people of Warsaw never forgot about me or my special vow. To show their thanks and to remember my promise, they carved statues of me. The statues show me as I promised I would be: a strong mermaid rising from the water, holding a sword and a shield, ready to protect them. They placed them in the heart of their city for everyone to see. When you visit Warsaw today, you can still see me there, a symbol of strength and protection. My story is told to children to remind them that kindness is always rewarded and that true courage means standing up for those who cannot defend themselves. My legend continues to inspire everyone who sees my statue, sparking their imagination and reminding them of the brave spirit of a city protected by its mermaid.
