Once, there was a mermaid named Sawa. She had a long, sparkly tail. Her tail shimmered with all the colors of a rainbow. It was so pretty. Sawa swam from the big, wide sea. Splash, splash, splash. She swam into a green river. Her sister swam one way, and Sawa swam the other. Sawa found a little village by the water. The little village was her new home. This is the story of The Warsaw Mermaid. It is a story all about Sawa.
Sawa loved her new river home. It was a happy home. At night, when the moon was bright, she sat on the riverbank. She sang beautiful songs. La la la. Her sweet music floated in the air. The fishermen in the village heard her sing. They loved her pretty songs. But one day, a man who was not nice heard her sing, too. He wanted to catch Sawa. Oh no. He caught her in a big, tangly net. He put the poor mermaid in a dark wooden box. Sawa was so sad and scared. She missed the cool, splashy river.
Inside the dark box, Sawa began to cry. Her tears were sad and sparkly. A kind young boy heard her sad song. He was a good and brave boy. He knew it was not right for a mermaid to be in a box. So, tip-toe, tip-toe, he went to the box. He opened the lock and let Sawa out. Hooray. Sawa was free. She splashed back into the river. She was so happy. She told the boy, "Thank you, thank you. I promise to always protect this village." She would be their guardian with her special sword and shield.
The little village grew bigger. And bigger. And bigger. It grew into a big, wonderful city called Warsaw. Sawa the mermaid always kept her promise. She was a good friend to the city. She watched over all the people. Today in Warsaw, you can see a big statue of Sawa. She is strong and brave, holding her sword and shield. She is still watching over her friends. The story reminds us to be brave and help our friends, just like the kind boy and Sawa the mermaid.
