The story

The Mermaid's Promise: The Legend of Syrenka

I am Syrenka, the mermaid of Warsaw. My home is the beautiful Vistula River, where the water sparkles like a thousand diamonds and the city’s sounds hum around me like a lullaby. For centuries, I have watched over this land from my watery realm, my silver tail swishing through the cool currents as my song is carried on the breeze. I have seen kings and queens, witnessed battles and celebrations, and watched as a humble fishing village grew into the magnificent city of Warsaw. But my story began long ago, when this city was just a small, hopeful settlement on the riverbank. It was then that I made a promise to protect its people, a solemn vow that is at the heart of my story, the tale of the Warsaw Mermaid.

I remember those early days with great fondness. The first settlers were hardworking folk, their hands calloused from building homes and weaving nets, but their laughter echoed over the water, full of life. I would often hide among the reeds, listening to their stories and humming along to their songs. I felt a deep connection to them and their dreams. But our peace was shattered by the arrival of a greedy merchant, a man named Kryszt whose heart was as cold and hard as the coins he hoarded. He saw the river not as a source of life but as a source of profit. His boats dumped waste into my clear waters, and his men treated the gentle fisherfolk with cruelty. His malevolent gaze soon fell upon me. He heard tales of my enchanting song and decided he would capture me. “A singing mermaid.” he declared to his crew. “She will make me the richest man in the world.” But I am a protector, not a prize. Seeing the fear in the eyes of the people I had grown to love, I knew I had to act. My voice, once gentle, now swelled with the power of the ancient river. I sang a song of defiance, a melody that called upon the Vistula itself to rise against this intruder. The currents churned into a whirlpool, rocking Kryszt's boats. The people on the shore, hearing my call and seeing my bravery, rallied together. “For Syrenka. For Warsaw.” they shouted, joining the fight to defend their home.

Kryszt, utterly defeated by a force he could not comprehend—the combined might of a magical guardian, a powerful river, and a united people—fled in terror, his ships battered and his greed thwarted. He was never seen on our waters again. From that day forward, the people of Warsaw knew I was their sworn guardian. They honored my courage not just with gratitude, but by making me a part of their city's very soul. My story was woven into their history, passed down through generations in songs and poems. To ensure no one would ever forget our victory, they commissioned a magnificent statue of me, a warrior mermaid with a sword and shield, and placed it by the river as a permanent reminder of my promise. My tale taught them that their strength lay in their unity and their respect for the river that gave them life. It showed them that the indomitable spirit of a community, standing up for what is right, is a force more powerful than any tyrant's greed. Today, I still watch over Warsaw. My image is on the city’s coat of arms, a symbol of its resilience and hope. My story continues to inspire the brave and kind people of this city, a timeless legend reminding them that magic is real when people and nature stand together as one.
