The story

The Myth of Ratoncito Pérez

You may see me as just a tiny shadow, a flicker of movement in the corner of your eye as the gas lamps of Madrid cast long, dancing shapes on the cobblestones. My coat is a simple grey, my whiskers twitch at the scent of baking bread from a nearby panadería, and my home is a humble box of biscuits. But I am more than just a city mouse. My name is Pérez, Ratoncito Pérez, and my work is of the highest importance, a secret mission that begins with the slightest wobble of a child’s tooth. I am a collector of tiny treasures, a keeper of courage, and a friend to royalty. My story, you see, is not just about a mouse and a coin; it is the tale of how a small creature was entrusted with a grand duty for a young king, a story that became known as the myth of Ratoncito Pérez.

My most famous adventure began on a cool evening in 1894. I lived with my family inside the walls of a grand confectionery shop at number 8, Calle del Arenal. But this night, a royal carriage sent a message just for me. The young King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, whom his mother called 'King Buby,' had lost his very first tooth. His mother, the Queen Regent María Cristina, was wise. She knew a king must be brave, but he must also be kind and understand the lives of all his people, not just those in the palace. She summoned me to the grand Palacio Real, a place with floors so vast they felt like frozen lakes and chairs as tall as mountains. Her request was simple yet profound: take the prince’s tooth, leave him a gift, but also, give him a lesson in empathy that he would carry for the rest of his life. I was to show him the world beyond the palace gates, a world he would one day rule.

When I crept into the royal bedchamber, King Buby was waiting with his tooth tucked safely under his pillow. With a whisper of mouse magic, I transformed the young king into a mouse just like me. His eyes, now tiny and bright, widened in astonishment. "What magic is this?" he squeaked. "The magic of seeing the world from a new perspective," I replied. Together, we squeezed through a crack in the wall and began our journey. We scurried through the hidden passages of the palace, listening to the quiet snores of the guards. Then, we ventured into the city's underbelly, through pipes and tunnels, emerging into the streets of Madrid. I led him to the modest homes of families who had little, yet whose children faced each day with courage. We saw a little boy who had lost a tooth but expected nothing in return, only hoping his family would have enough for breakfast. King Buby saw firsthand that bravery wasn't about wearing a crown; it was about facing life's small and large challenges with a strong heart. He learned that every person, rich or poor, had their own struggles and their own quiet victories.

Before the sun began to warm the sky, I took the king back to my home. There, in my little box of biscuits, I showed him my collection: countless tiny teeth from children all over the city. I explained that I didn't just collect them. I polished each one until it shone like a pearl and then guarded them, because each tooth was a tiny medal of bravery. The real gift wasn't the coin I left behind, but the recognition of their courage. We returned to the palace, and I reversed the magic. When King Buby awoke in his grand bed, he was a boy again, but a different one. He felt the space in his gum and reached under his pillow. There, he found a shiny gold coin, a special one I had left for him. But the true gift was the memory of the night and the understanding he now carried in his heart. He understood that a good king must see the world through the eyes of his people. This myth reminds us that the greatest treasures are not gold coins, but the lessons of empathy and courage we collect throughout our lives.
