Hello. My name is Minamoto no Raikō, and long ago, I was a samurai warrior sworn to protect the Emperor in the beautiful city of Kyoto. Our city was a wonderful place with golden-roofed temples and gardens full of whispering bamboo, but recently, a mysterious fear had crept into our streets. People whispered that a terrible monster, an oni, was causing trouble from his castle on Mount Ōe. They said he was big and scary and loved to cause mischief for the people of our city. This is the story of how my friends and I faced this great challenge, a legend that people now call the tale of Shuten Dōji.
The Emperor was very worried, so he asked me to help. I gathered my four most loyal and brave warriors, who were known as the Four Heavenly Kings. We were strong, but we knew we couldn't just charge up the mountain with our swords swinging. This monster, Shuten Dōji, was famous for being incredibly powerful and clever. We needed a plan that was even more clever than he was. So, we decided to disguise ourselves. We put on the simple robes and big straw hats of traveling mountain monks. As we journeyed up the foggy mountain path, we met three wise old men who appeared as if by magic. They smiled kindly and gave us two amazing gifts: a special helmet for protection and a bottle of magic sake. 'This drink,' they promised, 'will make any oni fall into a deep, deep sleep.'
At the top of the mountain, we found Shuten Dōji's giant iron fortress. When he saw us, he let out a booming laugh that shook the ground. 'Welcome, monks.' he bellowed, inviting us inside because he thought we were harmless. He was even bigger than the stories said, with wild red hair, sharp horns, and a mighty voice. He and his rowdy oni followers threw a big, noisy party for us, with strange foods and loud music. During the feast, we said, 'We have brought a special drink to share.' We poured the magic sake for everyone. Shuten Dōji and his friends loved it and drank every last drop. Just as the wise men had promised, their eyelids grew heavy, their heads began to nod, and soon the whole fortress was filled with the sound of loud, rumbling snores. Our clever plan was working perfectly.

Our clever plan was working perfectly.
As soon as the last oni was snoring, we quickly and quietly took off our monk disguises and put on our real armor. With the special helmet protecting me, my friends and I worked together as a team. We were swift and brave, and we made sure that Shuten Dōji and his followers could never bother the people of Kyoto again. When we returned to the city, everyone cheered. Peace had been restored, and the shadow of fear was gone. For hundreds of years, the story of our adventure has been told in Japan to show that courage, teamwork, and a clever plan can overcome even the biggest challenges. The legend of Shuten Dōji lives on in amazing paintings, exciting plays, and even video games, reminding everyone to be brave and that true heroes are those who protect others from harm.
