The story

The Tale of the Domovoy

Shhh, can you hear the fire crackle? In a cozy little house, a secret friend is hiding. He is a friendly spirit with a long, fluffy beard, and his job is to look after the family that lives there. He hides in warm corners, behind the big stove, or sometimes he peeks out from the attic to make sure everyone is happy and safe. He is very small, but his heart is very big. This is the story of the Domovoy, a happy house helper from a faraway story called Slavic Mythology.

Every night, when the family is asleep, the Domovoy comes out to do his work. If the children have been kind and tidy, he might polish the spoons until they sparkle and shine. He helps the bread rise big and tall for breakfast and keeps bad dreams away. But if the house is messy or people are grumpy, he might play a little trick. He will hide a sock or tangle some yarn to remind them that a happy home is a tidy home. He isn't being naughty, he is just helping them remember to care for each other.

Even though they can’t see him, the family knows the Domovoy is there. They leave a little bowl of milk or a crust of bread for him by the stove. This is their way of saying thank you. It makes the little spirit so happy. For thousands of years, people have told stories about the Domovoy to remember how important it is to love our homes and our families. These stories help us imagine all the secret magic that makes a house a home.
