The story

Journey to the West

The air in the grand city of Chang'an was filled with the scent of incense and the murmur of prayers, but my heart was restless. I am Tang Sanzang, a simple Buddhist monk, and I knew my life's purpose lay far beyond the city walls, on a dangerous road to the West. I was tasked with a great mission by the Emperor himself: to travel all the way to India and bring back sacred scriptures filled with wisdom, and this is the story of my Journey to the West. The path was said to be filled with treacherous mountains, raging rivers, and worst of all, powerful demons. But the kind Bodhisattva Guanyin promised I would not be alone; I would find three disciples to protect me. My first companion was the most famous troublemaker of all: Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. For 500 years, he had been trapped under a mountain as punishment for his mischief in the heavens. I freed him by removing a paper talisman, and in return, he became my loyal protector. He was incredibly strong and could see through any disguise, but he also had a fiery temper. Can you imagine having a friend that powerful but also that reckless? Guanyin gave me a special golden headband to place on his head. Whenever he became too reckless, a secret chant would tighten the band and remind him to be patient and kind. With the clever Monkey King by my side, I took my first steps toward the unknown.

As we traveled, our small group grew. Soon we met Zhu Bajie, a clumsy but good-hearted creature who was part man and part pig. He was once a general in the heavens but was banished to Earth for his greed. He loved to eat and often complained about the long journey, but his giant rake was a mighty weapon, and he was strong enough to carry all our heavy luggage. Next, we came to a wide, swirling river where we met Sha Wujing, a quiet and gentle river ogre. He, too, was a former heavenly general, banished for breaking a valuable jade cup. He was the calmest of us all and often acted as the peacemaker when Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie argued, which happened quite a lot. With his crescent-moon shovel, he protected me and helped us cross dangerous waters. Together, the four of us faced 81 trials. We battled fierce demons who wanted to capture me, believing that I was so pure that eating me would make them live forever. One of the trickiest was the White Bone Demon, who could change her shape. She disguised herself as an old woman, then a young girl, and then an old man to try and fool us. I was tricked by her disguises, but Sun Wukong, with his fiery golden eyes, could see she was a demon. “Master, that’s a demon!” he would shout, but I wouldn't listen. We argued because I thought he was hurting innocent people, but in the end, his wisdom saved us all. We learned that to succeed, we had to trust each other's strengths, forgive each other’s weaknesses, and work together as a team, no matter how scary the challenge.

After years of walking and countless adventures, we finally reached the West, a place known as Thunder Monastery in India. The air was peaceful, and we were greeted with kindness. We were given the sacred scriptures we had sought for so long. Our journey back was much quicker, and when we arrived in Chang'an, the Emperor and all the people celebrated. The wisdom in the scrolls was shared throughout the land, bringing knowledge and peace. For completing our quest, we were all rewarded. Sun Wukong and I achieved Buddhahood, the highest state of enlightenment. Sha Wujing became a golden Arhat, a worthy being, and even Zhu Bajie was rewarded for his efforts, being made the Altar Cleaner, which meant he could eat all the leftover offerings he wanted. My real-life journey took place in the 7th century, but our fantastic tale was written down in a famous book called Journey to the West by a writer named Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century. For hundreds of years, our story has been told in plays, operas, and now in cartoons and movies all over the world. It reminds everyone that a difficult journey is always worth it if it leads to knowledge and that with courage, perseverance, and good friends, you can overcome anything. Our adventure continues to spark imagination, teaching children that the greatest strength comes from working together.
