The story

The Fox and the Crow

Once there was a big, shiny crow named Corbeau. His feathers were as dark as the nighttime sky. One bright morning, Corbeau the crow found a tasty treasure. It was a big, yummy piece of cheese! What a treat! He flew up, up, up to the highest branch on a tall, tall tree. He wanted to eat his yummy cheese all by himself. This is the story of The Fox and the Crow.

Down below, a clever fox with a big, bushy tail walked by. His name was Renard. The fox looked up and saw the crow with the cheese. He had a tricky idea! Renard smiled a big smile. 'Oh, hello, beautiful crow!' he said in a sweet voice. 'Your feathers are so shiny. They look like black stars! You are the prettiest bird in the whole, wide forest.' The crow felt so happy. He puffed up his chest and felt very proud. He liked the nice words.

Then the clever fox said, 'A bird as pretty as you must have a pretty song. Oh, please sing for me! Please let me hear your beautiful voice.' Corbeau the crow was so proud, he forgot all about the cheese in his mouth. He wanted to show the fox his loud song. He opened his big beak and sang, 'CAW! CAW!'. But oh no! Plop! Down, down, down fell the yummy cheese. The fox opened his mouth and caught it. Gobble, gobble, gobble. The cheese was all gone. The crow learned that day that it is good to be proud, but it is better to be wise.
