The story

The Hero Twins

In a big, green jungle lived two brothers named Hunahpu and Xbalanque. They were twins, and they loved to play. Their favorite thing was a special ball game. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP went their bouncy rubber ball. They played all day. But deep under the ground, some grumpy lords did not like the noise. The lords sent a message to the twins. This is the myth of the Hero Twins and their big adventure.

Hunahpu and Xbalanque were very brave boys. They went down, down, down to the dark world under the ground. The grumpy lords wanted to trick them. First, the twins had to cross a bumpy, spiky river. But they were smart and found a smooth way to cross. Then, they had to sleep in a dark house full of noisy bats. SQUEAK, SQUEAK, SQUEAK went the bats. The twins were clever and stayed safe all night. They worked together to pass every tricky test.

At last, it was time to play the ball game against the grumpy lords. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP went the ball. The twins were so smart and so fast. They won the game. Because they were so brave and clever, they got a special reward. They went up, up, up into the big sky. Hunahpu became the big, bright Sun that shines in the day. His brother, Xbalanque, became the gentle, glowing Moon that shines in the night. Together, the Hero Twins light up our whole world.
