Just want The Legend of Bánh Chưng - Vietnamese?
My name is Lang Liêu, and long ago, I was the 18th son of the mighty Hùng King. Our kingdom was a green and peaceful land, with rice paddies that shimmered like emeralds under the sun. My father was growing old and wise, and one day he gathered all twenty-two of his sons and announced a contest to decide who would rule after him. It wouldn't be a test of strength or riches, but of heart and wisdom. Whoever brought him the most special and meaningful offering to honor our ancestors would become the next king. My brothers, who were great warriors and clever merchants, immediately set off to find rare pearls from the sea and exotic fruits from the mountains. I, however, was a simple prince who loved the land and the rhythm of the seasons. I didn't know what I could possibly offer. This is the story of how I found my answer, a story you might know as The Legend of Bánh Chưng.
Days turned into weeks, and I grew more worried. I watched my brothers return with chests of jewels and cages of colorful birds, but my hands were empty. I felt lost, knowing my simple life hadn't prepared me for this. I spent my time walking through the rice fields, listening to the wind whisper through the stalks. One night, tired and discouraged, I fell into a deep sleep. In my dream, a kind-faced deity with a gentle smile appeared before me. 'My boy,' the deity said, 'do not look for treasures in faraway lands. The most precious gift of all is right here, in the soil beneath your feet. It is the rice that nourishes our people, a gift from the heavens and the earth.' The deity then showed me how to create two special cakes. One was to be square, made of sticky rice filled with savory mung beans and tender pork, wrapped in green leaves to represent the Earth that holds us. The other was to be round and white, made from pure pounded rice, to represent the vast, round Sky above us. Can you imagine receiving such important instructions in a dream? I woke up with a feeling of peace and purpose. I knew exactly what I had to do.

The other was to be round and white, made from pure pounded rice, to represent the vast, round Sky above us. Can you imagine receiving such important instructions in a dream? I woke up with a feeling of peace and purpose. I knew exactly what I had to do.
I didn't travel to distant mountains or dive into the deep sea. Instead, I went to my own fields and gathered the best sticky rice, plump and fragrant. I found the sweetest mung beans and the finest pork. With my own hands, I prepared the ingredients with great care, just as the deity had shown me. I wrapped the square cake, which I called Bánh Chưng, in green banana leaves, tying them carefully with bamboo strings. It looked like a little green package, a gift from the earth itself. Then, I steamed the smooth, white rice to make the round cake, Bánh Dày. On the day of the contest, the palace was filled with amazing treasures. My brothers proudly displayed their rare finds. When it was my turn, I walked forward with my two simple cakes on a tray. I heard some of my brothers chuckle, whispering about my plain offering. My cakes didn't glitter or sing, but I presented them to my father with a heart full of respect for our land and our ancestors.
My father, the king, looked at my offering with a curious gaze. He asked me to explain their meaning. I told him about my dream and how the square Bánh Chưng represented the Earth, with its plants, animals, and people held within. I explained that the round Bánh Dày represented the endless Sky that gives us sun and rain. Together, they symbolized the harmony of Heaven and Earth and our gratitude for the simple food that keeps us alive. The king listened silently. He tasted a piece of each cake and a smile spread across his face. He stood up and declared, 'Lang Liêu has won! His offering is not the most expensive, but it is the most meaningful. He understands that our kingdom's greatest treasure is the land that feeds us and the bond we share with our ancestors.' He named me his successor, not for finding treasure, but for showing wisdom and a grateful heart.
And so, the Bánh Chưng and Bánh Dày became sacred foods in our land. Every year, during the celebration of Tết, our Lunar New Year, families gather to make these cakes. They place them on the family altar as an offering to their ancestors, just as I once did for my father. This story has been told for thousands of years, reminding everyone that true wealth isn't found in gold or jewels, but in love for one's family, respect for the earth, and gratitude for life’s simple gifts. And even today, this legend inspires people to find meaning not in what is rare, but in what is real and comes from the heart.
