The story

The Creator God, Viracocha

Long, long ago, the world was very quiet and very dark. It was like a big, empty room before anyone arrives for a party. A great creator named Viracocha floated on the calm water of a giant lake, and he knew it was time to make something wonderful. This is the story of how Viracocha painted the world with light and life.

First, the world needed light to see. So, Viracocha pulled the big, warm sun into the sky to shine all day long. What a bright, happy sun it was. For the nighttime, he placed the glowing moon and lots and lots of tiny, twinkling stars. Then, he raised his hands and whoosh. Tall mountains with snowy white tops pushed up to the clouds. He made wiggly rivers that giggled and flowed to the big sea. From the smooth stones on the shore, he carefully shaped the first people. He made people just like you and me. He gave them colorful clothes and taught them how to sing happy songs.

When Viracocha was finished, he walked across the beautiful land he had made. The world was not quiet or empty anymore. It was filled with the happy sounds of people laughing and birds singing. The Inca people always remembered Viracocha, the one who brought light and life to their world. When you look up at the tall mountains or see the bright stars in the sky, you can remember this story. It helps us see that our world is a beautiful and magical place.
