My name is Naiá, and long ago, my home was deep within the heart of the Amazon rainforest, where the air hummed with the songs of unseen creatures and the rivers flowed like silver ribbons. Every night, I would watch Jaci, the Moon, as he traveled across the dark sky, and I felt a longing I couldn't explain. This is the legend of the Vitória-Régia. Our elders told a story that Jaci sometimes chose a maiden from our village to become a star in his heavenly kingdom, and I dreamed of being the one he would choose. I was known in my Tupi-Guarani tribe as a dreamer. While other girls learned to weave baskets from palm leaves or prepare manioc root for our meals, my eyes were always turned upward. To me, Jaci wasn't just a distant light; he was a handsome warrior with a silver shield, and I had fallen completely in love with his quiet, shining strength. I imagined what it would be like to soar through the sky with him, leaving the jungle far below. This desire grew so strong that it became the only thing I could think about, a secret moon that lived inside my heart.
My quest to reach Jaci became my whole world. Night after night, when the village was hushed and my family was asleep in their hammocks, I would slip out of our dwelling and run through the jungle. The thick canopy of leaves overhead sometimes hid the sky, but I always found a clearing or a hilltop to continue my watch. I climbed the tallest, most ancient trees, their bark rough against my hands, stretching my arms toward the sky and calling his name softly. But the Moon, my silver warrior, always remained just out of reach, a silent traveler on a path I could not follow. I followed the shimmering trail his light made on the dark rivers, hoping it might be a magical bridge that would lead me to him. Can you imagine chasing a path of light on water. The jungle animals, from the chattering monkeys to the silent, powerful jaguar, would watch me from the shadows. They never harmed me. It was as if they understood the deep love in my heart and respected my strange, nightly journey. One night, after months of searching, I came to a lake so still and clear it looked like a polished obsidian stone. I was exhausted and sat by the water's edge to rest. As I looked down, my heart leaped with a joy I had never known—there was Jaci, floating on the surface, brighter and closer than ever before. In my weariness and overwhelming love, I didn’t realize it was only his reflection. Believing he had finally come down from the sky to be with me, I reached out to embrace him. Without a second thought, I dove into the cool, dark water.

Without a second thought, I dove into the cool, dark water.
As I sank into the deep, silent embrace of the lake, I never reached the moon I saw. My quest had ended, but my story was just beginning. Jaci, from his throne high above, had seen everything. He watched my nightly pursuits and was deeply moved by my unwavering devotion. He felt pity for my fate, knowing I could not survive in the water or live among the cold, distant stars. He decided that such a powerful love deserved a special place, not in the sky, but right here on Earth, where I could be near the water I loved and could gaze upon him every night. He decided to transform me. From the very spot where I disappeared beneath the water, a new and magnificent plant began to grow. It had an enormous, perfectly round leaf that floated on the surface like a green shield, strong enough for a bird to stand on. And from its center grew a breathtakingly beautiful white flower with countless petals that opened only at night, turning its face toward the sky. This flower was me, Naiá, reborn as the Vitória-Régia, the giant water lily. They call me the 'Star of the Waters.' Every evening, my petals open to greet my love, Jaci, and I close them when the sun's first light appears. My story is told to explain the creation of this amazing plant, a reminder that true love can transform us in the most mysterious ways. It teaches that even when we don't reach our dreams exactly as we planned, we can become something new and beautiful instead.
