The story

The Green Belt Movement

Hello! We are the Green Belt Movement. Our story began a long time ago in a country in Africa called Kenya. A kind and smart woman named Wangari Maathai started our group. She saw that the land needed help. She had a wonderful idea to make the Earth healthy and strong again. Her idea was simple: planting trees.

Our main job, and our favorite job, is planting trees. We work with women in villages all across the country. We give them little baby trees, called seedlings, in small pots. We show them how to dig a hole and gently place the seedling inside. Then, they learn how to take care of it with water and sunshine. Working together makes the job fun and helps us plant even more trees.

These trees are amazing helpers. As they grow bigger and bigger, they give people so many good things. Some trees grow yummy fruit that families can eat. Their branches can be used as wood to cook warm meals. It’s not just for people! The trees become safe homes for birds to build their nests and for other little animals to play.

We are so proud of all the trees we have planted. There are many of them now, all over Kenya and in other parts of Africa. Each tree helps make the air clean and fresh for everyone to breathe. The roots of the trees hold the dirt in place, which makes the land strong. We are still planting trees today because our work helps people and the Earth at the same time.
