A Story of Rice: The International Rice Research Institute

We are the International Rice Research Institute, an organization most people know by our initials, IRRI. Our story begins in 1960, when two groups, the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, decided to work with the government of the Philippines to help solve a serious global problem. At that time, many countries across Asia faced great difficulty in producing enough food for their growing populations. Millions of families experienced hunger, and a reliable food supply was urgently needed. For billions of people, rice was the most important food in their daily diet. The challenge was clear: how could science help farmers grow much more rice to feed everyone? Our purpose was born from that question. We were created to be a center for science and research focused entirely on this vital crop, with the mission of reducing hunger and poverty through our work.

Our headquarters was established in the Philippines, and our scientists began their work immediately. Their first task was to study the thousands of different kinds of rice that existed around the world. Each type, or variety, had unique qualities. Some were tall, some were short, some grew well in wet conditions, and others could resist certain diseases. By carefully studying these varieties, our researchers hoped to combine the best qualities into a new, stronger, and more productive type of rice. This required years of patient experiments, cross-breeding different plants to create a new one that would be perfect for farmers. The goal was to develop a rice plant that put most of its energy into growing grains of rice, not just tall stems and leaves.

In 1966, after much hard work, our scientists had a breakthrough. We developed a new variety of rice that we called IR8. This plant was different from many traditional types of rice. It was short and had a very strong, stiff stem. This meant it could support the weight of many more rice grains without falling over in the wind or rain. The results were amazing. Farmers who planted IR8 could harvest much more rice from the same amount of land than they ever could before. Because it had such a big impact on fighting hunger, some people began calling IR8 'Miracle Rice'. This incredible achievement was a key part of a worldwide effort that became known as the Green Revolution, a time when new farming methods and technologies helped increase food production and prevent widespread hunger in many parts of the world.

While creating new rice varieties was important, we also knew we had to protect the amazing diversity of rice that already existed. To do this, we created something very special: the International Rice Genebank. You can think of it as a huge, carefully protected library for seeds. Instead of holding books, it safely stores the seeds from more than 132,000 different types of rice gathered from countries all over the globe. This collection is incredibly valuable. Each seed variety contains unique genetic information that could be useful for solving future problems. By keeping these seeds stored in a very cold and secure environment, we make sure that this rice diversity is not lost forever. This genebank provides a vital resource for scientists today and for generations to come, allowing them to study and use these seeds to create even better rice plants in the future.

Today, our mission to improve lives and ensure there is enough food for everyone continues, but we face new and complex challenges. One of the biggest is climate change, which affects farmers through events like floods and long periods without rain. In response, our scientists are working to develop new kinds of rice that can survive in these tougher conditions. For example, we have developed rice that can withstand being underwater for weeks during a flood, as well as varieties that can grow with less water. We are also focused on making rice healthier by creating varieties with extra vitamins. We believe that sharing what we learn is just as important as the research itself. We work with farmers and scientists globally, sharing our knowledge and our special seeds to help build a future where everyone has enough nutritious rice to eat and where farming is kinder to our planet.
