The story

We Help the Elephants

Hello! We are the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Our home is in a big, beautiful country in Africa called Kenya. We have a very important job. We look for and take care of wild animals who are in trouble and need our help. We especially help baby elephants who have lost their mothers and cannot survive all by themselves. These little elephants are called orphans, and we work hard to give them a safe place to live and grow.

When we find a baby elephant who is all alone, we bring them to our special nursery. It is a safe and cozy home just for them. We give them warm blankets to sleep with, which makes them feel comfortable and loved. Just like human babies, they need milk to grow strong. We feed them a special kind of milk from a very big bottle. Our helpers are called keepers. The keepers stay with the baby elephants all day and all night, so they never feel lonely. We are like their new family.

As the little elephants drink their milk and play together, they start to get bigger and stronger. We teach them all the things they need to know to live in the wild. They learn how to find food and how to be part of an elephant family. We help them practice being wild elephants in a safe place.

When they are all grown up and ready, we help them go back to their real home in the wild. We take them to a big park where they can be free. There, they can join a new family of wild elephants. We feel so happy when we see them walk away to start their new lives. Our work is to make sure these wonderful animals are safe and can live happily in their natural home.
