The story

The World Health Organization

Hello! We are the World Health Organization, but many people call us by our shorter name, the WHO. We are a special group that is part of a larger team of countries called the United Nations. Being part of this team means we get to work with people from all over the globe. Our main job is a very important one: we work to help everyone, everywhere, be as healthy as they can possibly be. Health is more than just not being sick; it's about feeling strong and well so you can learn, play, and enjoy your life.

Our story began a long time ago, after a big world war had ended. During that difficult time, many countries realized that when people work together, they can solve huge problems. They decided that one of the most important problems to solve was how to keep people healthy. So, they created our organization to lead this work. We officially began our mission on April 7th, 1948. This date is so special that every year, people around the world celebrate it as World Health Day. To do our work, we needed a main office, which is called a headquarters. Our headquarters is located in a beautiful city named Geneva, in a country called Switzerland.

One of our biggest and most important jobs is to fight sickness and stop diseases from spreading from one person to another. In the past, there was a very serious disease called smallpox that made many people sick. We worked with countries all over the world to help give vaccines to people. A vaccine is a special kind of protection that teaches your body how to fight off certain germs. Thanks to this amazing teamwork, we were able to get rid of smallpox completely. We also work hard to fight other illnesses, like polio, so that children can grow up strong and healthy.

Our work isn't just about fighting diseases with medicine. We also help people learn how to stay healthy in their daily lives. We teach communities why it is important to have clean water to drink and to use for washing. Clean water helps wash away harmful germs. We also share information about eating healthy food to give our bodies energy and strength. Sometimes, big emergencies happen, like earthquakes or large storms. When they do, we are there to help make sure people have the medical care they need to be safe and to recover.

Today, we are still just as busy as when we first started. We continue our important mission to protect everyone's health. Our teams are always watching for any new diseases that might appear, so we can act quickly to stop an outbreak before it spreads too far. We share what we learn with doctors, nurses, and scientists everywhere. This sharing of information is a key part of our work because it helps everyone be prepared. Our goal is simple, but it is for every single person on Earth: we want to make sure that all people, no matter where they live or who they are, have a fair chance to live a long, happy, and healthy life.
