Just want Austronesian peoples?
We are the Austronesian peoples, a great family made up of many different cultures. Our communities are spread across thousands of islands in the vast Pacific and Indian Oceans. What connects all of us, from Madagascar off the coast of Africa to Easter Island in the east, are our languages and our shared history as master sea travelers. Our story is one of the greatest migrations in human history, an incredible journey that began thousands of years ago. Around 3000 BCE, our ancestors launched their first voyages from the island that is today called Taiwan, setting out to explore and settle the endless ocean.
To travel across such enormous distances, we had to become the world’s first great ocean explorers. We did not have the maps or compasses that sailors use today. Instead, we developed amazing sailing technology and navigation skills that were passed down through generations. Our canoes were fast and stable because we invented the outrigger, a float attached to the side of the boat that kept it from tipping over in rough seas. We also created efficient crab claw sails, which were shaped to catch the wind perfectly, allowing us to travel farther and faster. We learned to read the world around us. We navigated by watching the paths of the stars at night and the position of the sun during the day. We could even feel the direction of ocean swells, the long, rolling waves that told us which way the land was. We followed the flight patterns of birds, knowing they would lead us to islands we could not yet see.

As we journeyed from one island to the next, we brought our way of life with us. Our canoes were not just for travel; they were like moving gardens and farms. We carefully carried important plants like taro and yams, which we could grow for food in our new homes. We also brought animals like chickens and pigs, ensuring our families would have what they needed to start a new life. Today, our journey continues. Our cultures are still thriving all across the ocean we call home. There are hundreds of millions of us, and we keep our traditions alive through our art, our music, and our languages. We continue to share the stories of our ancestors, remembering our deep connection to history as the voyagers who explored and settled nearly half the globe.
