The story

A Family on the Ocean Waves

Hello! We are the Austronesian peoples. You can think of us as a very big family made up of many different groups of people. Our family is huge, and we live on islands all across the world’s oceans. If you look at a map, you will see that our homes stretch from the island of Madagascar, near Africa, all the way across the water to Southeast Asia. We live in places like Indonesia and the Philippines. Our communities reach across the vast Pacific Ocean, all the way to the tiny and faraway Easter Island in the east. For thousands of years, the ocean has not been a barrier for us, but a great highway that connects our many homes.

Our story begins a very long time ago, on an island called Taiwan. It was there, about 5,000 years ago, that our ancestors started one of the greatest journeys in all of human history. Our ancestors were brave and clever sailors. We built special boats called outrigger canoes. These boats had a float attached to the side, which helped them stay steady on the big ocean waves and travel long distances. We did not have compasses or modern maps. Instead, we learned to read the night sky like a map of stars. We watched the sun, understood the ocean currents, and followed the patterns of the waves to guide us. On our journeys, we brought important things with us, like plants to grow for food and animals to raise. This way, when we found a new island, we had everything we needed to start a new home.

Because we live in so many different places, our family has many different and beautiful cultures. While each of our communities has its own unique ways, some things are important to many of us. In most of our communities, family is at the center of everything, and we love to work together to help one another. We are also known for making wonderful art that shows our connection to the world around us. Some of us are famous for our detailed wood carvings, turning logs into amazing shapes and figures. Others are known for weaving colorful cloth with beautiful patterns. Music and dance are also a big part of our lives. We use songs and dances to tell the stories of our ancestors, to teach important lessons, and to celebrate special times together as a community.

Today, we, the Austronesian peoples, still live all around the world on the islands our ancestors first settled and in many other places, too. We work hard to keep our traditions alive for our children and grandchildren. We do this by speaking our many languages, gathering for festivals, and continuing to create our special art. We are very proud of our history as some of the world's greatest sailors and explorers. We honor our past while also being an important part of the modern world, sharing our cultures and our stories with everyone.
