Just want Etruscans?
Hello! We are the Etruscans, and we want to share the story of our people. We lived in a beautiful land called Etruria, which you would now find in a part of Italy called Tuscany. Our communities began to grow long ago, starting around 800 BCE, which was long before our neighbors, the Romans, became powerful. Our home was a place of lovely rolling hills. We chose to build our cities on the very tops of these hills. From up high, we could see all around us, which helped us stay safe and protected from anyone who might want to attack our homes.
We were talented artists and builders who loved to make beautiful things. Many of our artists were skilled at working with metal. They crafted shiny bronze mirrors that people could use to see their reflections, and they made stunning gold jewelry that was worn with pride. We are also famous for our terracotta sculptures. Terracotta is a type of baked clay, and we shaped it into amazing figures. Even the places where we buried our loved ones were filled with art. Inside our tombs, we painted colorful pictures on the walls. These paintings often showed happy celebrations with music and dancing, giving a glimpse into our lives.
In our families and cities, women had a very important and unusually free role. They were respected members of our society and took part in public life in ways that were different from many other ancient cultures. Besides our art and our communities, another thing that made us special was our language. It was unique, and we wrote it in a way that might seem backward to you today—from right to left instead of left to right. Even though scholars can now read our alphabet, much of our language remains a mystery, and they are still working to understand the meaning of all our words.

As time passed, the Romans grew stronger and our civilization was eventually absorbed by theirs. But this was not the end of our story, because many of our ideas and skills lived on. The Romans learned a lot from us. For example, we taught them how to build the arch, a strong and beautiful shape used in buildings and bridges. They also adopted the idea of gladiator games from us. Today, people learn about our history by studying the things we left behind. The art, sculptures, and objects found in our tombs are like puzzle pieces that help everyone understand who we were and how we lived so long ago.
