The story

The Maasai: Herders of the Savanna

Hello! We are the Maasai people. Our home is in Africa, in two countries named Kenya and Tanzania. We live on big, wide-open grasslands called savannas. Here, the sun is warm and the sky is big. We share our home with many amazing animals. We often see tall giraffes munching on leaves from the tops of trees. We also see large families of elephants walking across the plains. It is wonderful to live alongside these animals.

The most important animals to us are our cows. We are herders. Being a herder means we take care of our cows all day, every day. Our cows are very special to our families. We move around a lot to make sure they are happy and healthy. We walk with them to find fresh, green grass for them to eat. We also lead them to cool, clean water to drink. Taking care of our cows is a big part of our life on the savanna.

We have many colorful traditions that we love. You can often see us wearing our special red cloths. These are called shukas. They are bright and comfortable. We also love making and wearing beautiful jewelry. We use beads of many different colors to create wonderful designs for our necklaces and bracelets. Our celebrations are full of joy. We love to sing our songs together. We also have a famous jumping dance. Our dancers leap high into the air!

We are proud to be Maasai people, and we are still here today. We are happy to carry on our traditions and share our culture with our children. We continue to wear our colorful shukas and beaded jewelry. We still sing our songs and do our jumping dance so our traditions will stay strong for a long, long time.
