The story

The Carvers of the Rock City

Hello! We are the Nabataeans. We want to tell you our story. We lived a very, very long time ago.

Our home was in a big, rocky desert. It was a beautiful place. We saw tall, red mountains all around us. The sand stretched for miles and miles. We were very good at traveling across our desert home. We had strong animal friends called camels. Our camels would carry things for us as we walked across the sand. We always traveled together in long lines. These long lines of people and camels were called caravans. It was a special way to travel safely.

We built a wonderful city called Petra. It was our secret! Our city was hidden between the tall rocks of the mountains. It was hard for strangers to find. We did not build our city with bricks. We did something amazing! We carved our homes right into the sides of the mountains. The rock was a beautiful pink and red color. We used tools to carefully carve big buildings and cozy homes into the rock walls. Imagine living in a home made of rock!

Our kingdom ended a long time ago, but our story is not over. You can still visit our city of Petra today. People come from all over the world to see it. They walk through the tall rocks and find our secret city. They look at the amazing buildings we carved. When people see Petra, they remember us, the Nabataeans, and the beautiful city we carved from rock.
