The story

The Great Red Fortress of Agra

I stand tall and strong on the banks of the Yamuna River in India. My walls are made of deep red sandstone that glows like a sunset. They curve around me like a giant hug, almost two miles long. Inside my walls, I hold secret gardens, fancy courtyards, and palaces that sparkle. From some of my windows, you can see a beautiful white marble palace across the river, which is a very special place. I have been watching over my city for a very long time. I am the Agra Fort.

A very long time ago, a great ruler named Emperor Akbar decided he needed a mighty new home. In the year 1565, he told his builders to create a fortress that was stronger than any other. Thousands of workers spent eight long years building my giant red walls. I wasn't just built to be strong; I was also the emperor's home and the capital of the whole Mughal Empire. I felt so important. I watched over the city of Agra and kept everyone inside safe and sound behind my powerful red stone gates.

Many years later, Emperor Akbar’s grandson, Shah Jahan, became the emperor. He loved art and beautiful buildings even more than fighting battles. Around the 1630s, he decided to add his own special touch to me. He said, “This fortress is strong, but it must also be beautiful.” So he built dazzling palaces inside my red walls, but his were made of shiny white marble. He decorated them with gold and colorful jewels that glittered in the sun. It was from one of these beautiful marble balconies that he would gaze at the Taj Mahal, the famous tomb he built for his beloved wife.

Today, my gates are open for everyone. In 1983, I was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means I am a treasure for the whole world to protect. Families and friends from all over come to walk through my grand halls. They imagine the sounds of the emperor's court and listen for the stories my walls could tell. I love sharing my history, showing how the strength of red stone and the beauty of white marble can live together. I stand proud, reminding everyone of a brilliant past and inspiring new stories for the future.
