The story

The Whispering Caves

I am a secret hidden inside a big, rocky hill. I live in a country called India, where a river flows nearby like a shiny ribbon. If you step inside me, you will feel cool and quiet. The sunshine stays outside, and my stone walls whisper stories from a long, long time ago. I have many rooms, like a big stone house. Can you guess who I am. I am the amazing Ajanta and Ellora Caves.

Long, long ago, friendly people came to the rocky hill where I sleep. They used small tools to chip, chip, chip away at the stone. It was like they were carving a giant pumpkin, but it was me. They worked for hundreds of years to make me a special place. They wanted me to be a peaceful home for quiet thoughts and happy stories. Inside my rooms, they painted beautiful pictures on my walls with bright colors. They also carved big, friendly statues out of my stone. Different groups of friends worked together to make me beautiful, and they filled me with art and love.

For a very long time, I was all alone. The jungle grew around me like a big, green blanket. Tall trees and wiggly vines hid my doors, and nobody knew I was there. It was my sleepy time. Then one day, on April 28th, 1819, a man named John Smith was walking through the jungle. He saw something special peeking through the leaves. It was me. He had found my secret. Now, friends from all over the world come to visit. They look at my paintings and statues with wide eyes. I am a special treasure, here to share my wonderful stories carved in stone with you.
