The story

The Land of the Stone Ribbon

Imagine a special place with big, sleepy rivers that twist and turn. High, high mountains tickle the clouds with their pointy tops. In the green fields below, clever people worked hard, planting yummy food and building wonderful things. They smiled and sang as they built their homes. Hello. I am the land of Ancient China. I am a very old and happy place, and I have a story to tell you. My story is full of big ideas and even bigger walls.

For a long, long time, big families looked after me. One day, a great king named Qin Shi Huang wanted to keep everyone safe and sound. He had a very big idea. He said, "Let's build a wall. A wall so long it can hug the mountains.". So his people started to build. They stacked stone after stone, like you stack your blocks, higher and higher. The wall grew longer and longer until it looked like a giant stone ribbon stretched over the hills. That wall is my Great Wall. The people here were so clever. They also made soft, white paper to draw pictures on and fun kites that could dance with the wind on a breezy day.

My ancient days are over now, but my gifts are still here for you. People from all over the world come to visit me. They love to walk on my Great Wall and pretend they are ancient kings and queens. The paper my clever people made is used for your coloring books and storybooks. It helps you share your own wonderful ideas. My story is now part of your story. My ideas can still help you build, dream, and create amazing things. I am here to remind you to always have big dreams.
