The story

The Waterfall in the Clouds

Deep inside a lush jungle in a country called Venezuela, a secret symphony plays. It is the sound of water roaring, a constant thunder that echoes between giant, flat-topped mountains that touch the sky. If you could find your way here, you would see a constant rainbow hanging in the air, born from the mist I create. I pour from the edge of a massive stone giant, a mountain the local people call Auyán-tepui, which means 'Devil's Mountain'. From its flat top, I begin my journey. I leap into the air as a single, shimmering silver ribbon of water. I fall for so long, nearly a whole kilometer, that I turn into a cloud of mist before I ever reach the jungle floor below. I am the tallest waterfall in the world. To the Pemón people who have always known me, I am Kerepakupai Merú. To the rest of the world, I am Angel Falls.

My story did not begin with a single person or a single day. It began millions of years ago, when the very rock I flow over was formed. The Auyán-tepui is an ancient sandstone plateau, a tableland so vast that clouds get tangled on its surface. For countless ages, rain has fallen on this massive tabletop, gathering in streams and rivers that crisscross its surface. All that water rushes toward my edge, searching for a way down. The first people to know my song were the Pemón. For centuries, they have lived in the shadow of the great tepuis. They understood my power and saw this land as sacred, a place to be respected. For a long time, I was their secret. In the year 1912, a Venezuelan explorer named Ernesto Sánchez La Cruz navigated the jungles and spotted me from a distance, but his discovery didn't make headlines, and my story remained whispered only by the wind and the trees.

My worldwide fame began with an adventurous American pilot named Jimmy Angel. He was a man who loved the sky and was always searching for treasure. On November 16th, 1933, he was flying his small plane over the jungle, looking for a legendary river of gold he had heard stories about. He didn't find the river, but as he flew his plane around a bend in the canyon, he found me instead. He stared in awe as my silver ribbon plunged from the sky. He knew he had to return. On October 9th, 1937, he came back with his wife and two friends. He wanted to land his flamingo-colored plane, which he called El Río Caroní, right on top of the Auyán-tepui. But the landing did not go as planned. Instead of a hard, flat runway, the ground was soft and marshy. The plane's wheels sank deep into the mud, and it was stuck. There was no way to take off again. Jimmy Angel and his companions had to make an incredible 11-day trek through the dangerous jungle to get back to civilization. Their survival story was so amazing that newspapers around the globe wrote about them—and about me. The world finally knew I existed. Years later, in 1949, an expedition led by a journalist named Ruth Robertson made the difficult journey to my base and officially measured me, confirming I was the tallest of all.

Because of my incredible height and the unique world around me, my home, Canaima National Park, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. This title means I am considered a treasure for all of humanity, a place that must be protected forever. Today, people still make a great journey to see me. They travel for days in canoes, called curiaras, up winding rivers and then hike through the dense, green jungle just for a glimpse of my great fall. I am a powerful reminder of the wild beauty of our planet. The pilot who made me famous was searching for gold, but he found something far more valuable. I show that the greatest treasures are not metals you can hold, but the wonders of water, stone, and time. And so I will continue to fall from the clouds, singing my ancient song for anyone who comes to listen and dream.
