Just want Atlantic Forest?
Imagine a long, green ribbon stretching for miles and miles right next to a sparkling blue ocean. I am filled with the sounds of buzzing insects, chattering monkeys, and the songs of colorful birds hiding in my leaves. The air here is warm and damp, like a gentle hug, and my tallest trees link their branches together to create a giant green roof over everything. For a long time, people just saw my green leaves and heard my animal sounds. But I have a name. I am the Atlantic Forest.
My story is very, very old. For millions of years, I grew strong and wide along the coast of a beautiful land that is now called Brazil. For thousands of those years, the Tupi people lived here with me. They were my friends. They knew all my secrets, like which of my plants could be used for yummy food and which leaves could help if you felt sick. I was a safe home to so many amazing animals you couldn't find anywhere else in the world, like the bright golden lion tamarin and the big, gentle tapir that quietly walks on my forest floor.
But one day, everything started to change. On April 22nd, in the year 1500, big wooden ships with tall white sails arrived on my shores. Men from a faraway country called Portugal, led by an explorer named Pedro Álvares Cabral, stepped onto my land. They looked around and were amazed by my giant trees. They especially loved one tree with wood as red as a sunset. They called it ‘Pau-brasil,’ which means Brazilwood. They liked this tree so much that they decided to name the whole land ‘Brazil’ after it. But over the next few hundred years, from the 1500s to the 1800s, more and more people came. They cut down many of my beautiful trees to build cities and to grow things like coffee and sugar. I began to shrink, and many of my animal friends sadly lost their homes.

I became much, much smaller. I was just a tiny piece of the giant forest I once was, and I felt very lonely. But then, something wonderful happened. People started to see how important I am. In the 1980s, kind people began working hard to protect me. They said, “This forest gives us clean air and fresh water. We must save it.” They created special parks where my trees could not be cut down and my animals could live safely. Now, every year on November 27th, people in Brazil celebrate the National Day of the Atlantic Forest. On this day, they plant new trees and teach children all about me, helping me grow strong again.
Today, I am a treasure that people work hard to protect. I am a living story that reminds everyone that even when something is almost lost, we can work together to save it. I am still a home for amazing animals like jaguars, toucans, and tiny, colorful frogs. Every day, my leaves work hard to clean the air and my roots help keep the water fresh. I am hopeful for my future, and I hope you will always remember how important it is to protect the wonderful, wild places of our world.
