The story

Brasília: The City Shaped Like an Airplane

If you were a bird soaring high above the heart of Brazil, you would see something amazing. Down below, resting on a vast, green plateau, a city is shaped just like an airplane, with its wings stretched out as if ready for flight. My wide avenues are my wings, and my most important buildings sit in the cockpit. My structures don’t have sharp corners. Instead, they are full of graceful curves and bold, futuristic shapes that reach for the wide-open sky. I am not a city that grew slowly over time. I was born from a dream, planned from the very first brick to be something new and exciting. I am Brasília, the capital of Brazil, a city built to inspire.

For a very long time, the capital of Brazil was a beautiful city on the coast called Rio de Janeiro. But Brazil is a huge country, and many people felt the capital should be right in the middle, in the country's heart, to help bring everyone together and develop the inland areas. This was not a new idea. In fact, the dream of a central capital was so important that it was written into the country’s constitution all the way back in 1891. For decades, it remained just words on paper. Then, a president with big dreams came along. His name was Juscelino Kubitschek. In 1956, he made a bold and famous promise to the people of Brazil: to achieve “fifty years of progress in five.” Part of that promise was to finally build the new capital and turn the old dream into a real city.

Before I existed, this place was a wide, empty savanna called the Cerrado. There were no roads, no buildings, just reddish earth and scrubby trees under an endless blue sky. It was a blank canvas waiting for an artist. The artists who imagined me were brilliant. An urban planner named Lúcio Costa won a contest to design my layout. He drew my famous airplane shape, which he called the 'Plano Piloto' or Pilot Plan, so that everything would be organized and easy to navigate. Then, the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer designed my incredible buildings. He gave them flowing, modern shapes that looked like nothing else in the world. But dreams and drawings don’t build a city. For that, you need builders. Starting in 1956, thousands of hardworking people came from all over Brazil. They were called the 'candangos,' and they worked day and night in the dust and the sun. In just over three years, they performed a miracle. They built an entire city from scratch. You could see my famous structures taking shape, like the National Congress building with its two giant bowls—one facing up to the sky and one down to the earth—or my beautiful Cathedral, which looks like a crown or a pair of hands reaching up to pray.

Finally, the big day arrived. On April 21st, 1960, I was officially opened to the world. It was a massive celebration. People crowded my new streets, their faces filled with wonder and excitement. They had traveled from all across Brazil and even from other countries to see the brand-new capital that had been built so quickly in the middle of nowhere. On that day, I wasn't just a collection of new buildings. I officially became the heart of Brazil's government, a symbol of a new era. The air was buzzing with pride for what the country had achieved and filled with hope for a brighter, more modern future for all its people. It was a moment that showed the world the power of a shared dream.

Today, I am a bustling city, home to millions of people. My airplane wings are filled with homes, parks, and schools. In 1987, I received a very special honor. I was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, not for being ancient, but for being a masterpiece of modern city planning and architecture. My design is recognized as unique in the entire world. I stand as a living example of how a big, creative idea can become a reality. I am a city that encourages everyone to dream big and think about the future. I hope to always remind people that with bold vision, teamwork, and imagination, we can work together to build truly amazing things that can change the world for the better.
