Just want Cappadocia?
Have you ever seen a place with pointy rock hats? People call them 'fairy chimneys,' and I have thousands of them. My stone is soft and sandy, glowing gold when the sun wakes up and turning pink when it goes to sleep. For millions of years, the wind and rain have been my artists, carving me into funny shapes like mushrooms, cones, and even camels. I am a land full of wonderful surprises and ancient secrets. Can you guess where I am? I am Cappadocia, a magical place right in the heart of a country called Turkey. I have so many amazing stories to tell you.
My story began a very, very long time ago, even before there were people here. Giant volcanoes, like my neighbors Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan, had big tummy rumbles. Boom. They erupted and covered me in thick, soft layers of ash that hardened into rock. As many, many years passed, the wind and rain I told you about went to work. They washed and blew away the softest parts of the rock, leaving behind my wonderful fairy chimneys. Long ago, around the 4th century, people discovered I was a perfect place to hide. They learned my rock was soft enough to carve but strong enough to be a home. They carefully dug out secret houses, churches, and even whole cities deep underground to stay safe from their enemies. Inside their secret church rooms, they painted beautiful pictures of people and stories right onto my walls. If you visit today, you can still see the colorful paintings they left behind.
Today, I don't have to keep secrets anymore. I love having visitors. People come from all over the world to see my amazing shapes and explore my hidden caves. My favorite time of day is the morning. Just as the sun peeks over the horizon, hundreds of colorful hot air balloons lift into the sky. They look like giant, gentle bubbles floating past my fairy chimneys, filled with happy, waving people. It’s the most beautiful sight, and it happens almost every single day. Because I am so special, in the year 1985, people decided to protect me. I became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a special promise that everyone will take good care of me so I can be shared for many, many years to come.
