The story

The Walled City of Colors

Imagine a place where the warm sun kisses your skin and a gentle sea breeze whispers through the streets. The buildings around you are not plain and gray. Instead, they are painted in every color of the rainbow, from mango yellow and sunshine orange to ocean blue and leafy green. As you walk on the bumpy cobblestone streets, you hear the happy clip-clop of horses pulling carriages. The air smells sweet and salty all at once, a mix of tropical flowers and the nearby Caribbean Sea. I am Cartagena de Indias, a jewel on the coast of Colombia.

My story began a very long time ago. An explorer from Spain named Pedro de Heredia arrived at my shores and founded me on June 1st, 1533. I quickly became a very important port city. Ships would sail to my harbor to pick up amazing treasures like shiny gold and sparkling green emeralds to take back to their king. But having so much treasure also brought trouble. Sometimes, sailors called pirates would try to attack me and steal my riches. In 1586, a famous English captain named Sir Francis Drake came with his ships and caused a big scare. The people who lived here knew they needed to keep me safe. So, they began to build a giant stone wall all around me. It was like I was getting a big, strong stone hug. Building that hug took a very, very long time, nearly 200 years. They also built strong forts, like the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, to watch for danger. My walls were so strong they kept me safe for many years.

Today, my big stone hug is still here, but things are very different. The walls no longer keep pirates out. Instead, they welcome friendly visitors from all around the world. People love to walk along the top of my walls, especially when the sun sets and paints the sky pink and orange. My plazas are filled with happy music and dancing, and beautiful flowers spill over my balconies like colorful waterfalls. I am no longer just a place of treasure and forts. I am a city of stories, strength, and bright colors. I love showing everyone that history isn't just in books, it can be alive, joyful, and welcoming to all.
