The story

The Story of Cartagena de Indias

Feel the warm Caribbean sun on your skin and the salty breeze that dances in from the sea. Can you hear the gentle clop-clop of horse-drawn carriages on my cobblestone streets. Look up at my buildings, painted in every color of the rainbow, with bright flowers spilling from their wooden balconies. For centuries, I have sat here, nestled against the sparkling blue water, a city of stories and secrets. My streets are a maze of history, where every corner has something to whisper about the past. I am a place where memories are baked into the very stones beneath your feet. I am Cartagena de Indias, a jewel on the coast of Colombia.

My story begins long, long ago. Before my stone walls and colorful houses, this land was home to the Calamari people. They lived peacefully by my beautiful bay. Then, a new chapter started. On June 1st, 1533, a Spanish explorer named Pedro de Heredia sailed into my harbor. He saw how the water was calm and protected, a perfect place to build a city and a port. He and his men began to build the first wooden houses and lay out my first streets. Soon, I was growing into an important city for Spain. Ships from all over the world would dock in my harbor, making me a busy and bustling gateway to the vast continent of South America.

Being an important city came with great danger. Because I was a port where treasures from all over the continent, like gold and emeralds, were stored before being shipped to Spain, I became a target for pirates and privateers. They wanted my riches. The most famous attack happened in 1586, when the English privateer Sir Francis Drake and his men stormed my streets. It was a frightening time, and after they left, my people knew they needed a better way to protect me. So they decided to build me a suit of stone armor. They began constructing massive stone walls, which they called 'las murallas'. This was not a quick project. The work started in the late 16th century and took nearly 200 years to complete. To make me even stronger, they built the mighty fortress, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, on a hill overlooking the city. It stood like a powerful guard, ready to defend me from any attack.

Within my strong walls, a new kind of story was unfolding. I became a place where people from many different parts of the world met. People from Europe, from the Americas, and from Africa all lived and worked together inside my walls. It was not always an easy history. Many people were brought from Africa against their will, a sad and difficult part of my past. But these people showed incredible strength. They brought with them their own traditions, and soon, their music, their dances, and their delicious food became a vital part of my soul. I became a city that pulsed with a new and vibrant culture. This spirit of strength led to a very brave moment. On November 11th, 1811, the people inside me declared their independence from Spain. It was a heroic act that earned me the nickname 'La Heroica', The Heroic City.

Today, my heart beats as lively as ever. My story of survival and strength was so important that in 1984, I was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a special honor that means my history and beauty are protected for the whole world to appreciate. If you walk through my streets now, you will see artists painting in my plazas and hear the joyful rhythms of cumbia music floating in the air. You will see families laughing and playing on my nearby beaches. My stone walls, which were once built to keep people out, now welcome everyone in. They stand as a reminder of my past, but they also embrace the present, sharing my stories of resilience, culture, and the wonderful, vibrant spirit of Colombia.
