The story

The Whispering Walls of Lascaux

I am a quiet, dark place hidden deep under a hill in a country called France. For thousands and thousands of years, I slept, holding a beautiful secret on my walls. I am not a big castle or a cozy house, but a natural cave made of rock. Inside me, it is always cool and very silent, except for the tiny drip-drip-drip of water making little sounds. On my smooth stone walls, a whole world of animals leaps and runs. You can see them in paintings of red, black, and yellow. People call me the Cave of Lascaux, and I am a gallery of ancient art.

A very long time ago, around 17,000 years ago, people lived during a time called the Ice Age. They found my hidden entrance and decided to come inside. They crawled into my dark halls holding flickering torches that made the shadows dance all around them. They were not just looking for a place to stay warm; they were amazing artists. They made their own paint by grinding up colorful rocks and mixed it with water. They used brushes made from twigs and soft animal hair. They covered my walls with incredible pictures of giant bulls, graceful deer, and strong horses. I watched them work so carefully, and I felt proud to hold their beautiful art. I became their very special and secret art gallery.

After the artists left me, my entrance was buried by dirt and rocks. I was hidden away for thousands and thousands of years. I kept all my paintings safe inside me, away from the sun and rain. Then, one sunny afternoon, on September 12th, 1940, my long, quiet sleep was over. A boy named Marcel Ravidat and his three friends were playing outside. Their clever little dog, Robot, started chasing a rabbit and suddenly disappeared down a mysterious hole in the ground. The boys were curious and brave, so they wiggled down the hole to find their dog. When they lit a small match, they all gasped. Their flickering light showed them my amazing secret. The walls were covered with the ancient animals.

After the boys found me, news of my secret art spread quickly. People from all over the world came to see my amazing paintings. But all the warm air from so many visitors started to make my ancient art fade away. This made me sad. To keep my pictures safe and bright, I was carefully closed to visitors in 1963. But do not worry, my story did not end there. Wonderful artists and scientists built a perfect copy of me right nearby. It is called Lascaux IV, and it opened in 2016. Now, you can see my paintings exactly as they are without hurting the real ones. I am a real treasure from the past, showing everyone how people made beautiful art a very, very long time ago.
