The story

The Stone City That Talks to the Stars

I feel the warm sun on my stone skin every morning. All around me, the jungle sings with the sounds of chirping birds and buzzing insects. Twice a year, when the day and night are the same length, a magical thing happens. As the sun sets, a shadow that looks just like a giant snake slithers down the stairs of my biggest pyramid. It’s a special secret I share with the sky. I am Chichen Itza, a great city of stone built long, long ago by the clever Maya people in a country called Mexico. I have watched the sun rise and set for more than a thousand years.

The Maya people started building me a very long time ago, around the 6th century. For hundreds of years, more and more people came to live here, and I grew into a big, busy city. The people who built me were so smart. They were amazing builders and thinkers. They built my most famous pyramid, which they called El Castillo, and finished it around the 9th century. It’s not just a pyramid; it’s a giant stone calendar. Another one of my special buildings is round like a snail's shell. It's called El Caracol, or The Observatory. From there, wise astronomers watched the stars and planets move across the night sky. They used what they learned to make very accurate calendars to know when to plant their crops. I also have a huge field called the Great Ball Court. The Maya played a special game here. It was so exciting. The whole city would gather to watch the players try to get a rubber ball through a high stone hoop. I loved being a place where everyone came together to learn, play, and celebrate.

After many wonderful centuries, the Maya people slowly moved away to other places, around the 13th century. My stone buildings became quiet, and the jungle grew around me, keeping me safe like a big, green blanket. But I was never truly forgotten. Many years later, in the 1800s, explorers found me again. They carefully cleared away the vines and dirt and were amazed by my tall pyramids and wide-open plazas. Today, I am so happy because people from all over the world come to visit me. They walk where the Maya once walked and look up at the same stars the astronomers studied. I love sharing the amazing story of the brilliant Maya people. I hope that when you see my strong stone temples, you feel inspired to learn new things, build amazing creations, and always reach for the stars.
