Just want Cusco?
Can you imagine living so high up that you can almost touch the clouds? That’s where I am, nestled deep in the Andes Mountains of Peru. The air here is crisp and clean, and sometimes I see mighty condors with their giant wings soaring high above me. My walls are made of giant, strong stones, and if you were a bird looking down from way up high, you would see that I am shaped like a powerful, watchful puma. If you walk along my streets, you will hear the clip-clop of your shoes on my old cobblestones, the same stones that people walked on hundreds of years ago. I am a magical city full of history and wonder. I am Cusco, a jewel of Peru, and the Inca people built me to be strong and beautiful.
My story began a very, very long time ago, around the year 1200, when the first Inca people arrived in this valley and decided to make it their home. For many years I was a quiet town, but I was waiting for my time to shine. In the year 1438, a great and wise ruler named Pachacuti decided I would be the capital, the most important city in the entire Inca Empire. He helped me grow into a grand city. My most special building was the Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun. It was like a house for the sun itself, covered in shining gold that glittered and gleamed in the bright mountain light. The Inca builders were some of the most skilled in the world. They didn’t have big machines like we have today. They used their hands and their clever minds to fit enormous stones together so perfectly that you can’t even slide a piece of paper between them. They wanted me to last forever.
Cusco: The City in the Clouds

My most special building was the Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun. It was like a house for the sun itself, covered in shining gold that glittered and gleamed in the bright mountain light. Many years passed, and I was happy being the heart of the Inca world. Then, in the year 1533, new people arrived from far across the ocean. These were the Spanish explorers. When they saw me, they were amazed by my strength. They looked at my solid stone foundations and thought, “These walls are so well-built. We will build our city right on top.” So they did. This made me a very unique city, a place where two different worlds came together. Now, when you walk my streets, you see something amazing. You see my original Inca walls at the bottom, strong and gray, and sitting right on top of them are beautiful buildings with red-tiled roofs and wooden balconies, built in the Spanish style. It’s like I am wearing two beautiful outfits at once.
Today, my heartbeat is stronger than ever. I am not a quiet ruin. I am a living city, full of life. Children laugh as they run through my plazas, and the markets are filled with the bright colors of woven blankets and the delicious smells of cooking food. I am a living storybook, showing how two different cultures can come together to create something new and beautiful. I am a bridge between the past and the present, and I remind everyone that history is not just in books—it is alive, all around you, in the very stones beneath your feet.
