Just want Doñana National Park?
Imagine a place where cool water tickles the roots of ancient trees in sprawling marshes. Picture golden sand dunes, so big they look like sleeping giants, slowly shifting with every whisper of the wind. Now, wander into a forest where tall pine trees offer cool shade from the warm sun. Can you hear that? It is not just the wind. It is the sound of millions of flapping wings, a chorus of calls from birds who have traveled from very far away just to visit. In this place, the land and water are always dancing together, creating a perfect rest stop for travelers with feathers and fur. I am a wild heart beating in the south of Spain. I am Doñana National Park.
My memory is long, stretching back through centuries. I remember a time when kings and queens on horseback would ride through my forests, their laughter echoing through the trees as they came here to hunt. My name was given to me in the 16th century, a gift from a duchess named Doña Ana de Mendoza. She loved this land so much that she built a beautiful palace here to be close to my wild beauty. For a long time, I was a place for royalty. But as the world changed, so did the way people saw me. In the 20th century, scientists and people who loved nature began to understand that I was more than just a pretty landscape. They saw I was a vital home for creatures found nowhere else. People like José Antonio Valverde fought to protect me, arguing that my true treasure was my wildlife. Their hard work paid off. In 1963, a part of me was purchased to create the Doñana Biological Reserve. Then came an even bigger day. on October 16th, 1969, I was officially named a National Park, a promise that I would be protected forever, for everyone.

Because I am so protected, I am a safe haven for some very rare friends. If you are quiet and very lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the Iberian lynx. With its golden, spotted coat and ears with little tufts of black fur, it is one of the rarest cats in the entire world. Here, within my borders, these shy creatures can raise their families in peace. Look up to the sky, and you might see a Spanish imperial eagle, a majestic bird with powerful wings, soaring high above the treetops. But my most famous role is being a hotel for birds. Each year, millions of them travel between Africa and Europe, and they use my wetlands as a crucial place to rest, eat, and refuel for their long journey. Because I am such an important meeting point for wildlife, the world took notice. In 1980, UNESCO named me a Biosphere Reserve, and in 1994, they declared me a World Heritage Site, which is like getting a gold medal for being one of nature's most special places.
My life has not always been easy. I have faced great challenges that tested my strength. I remember one terrible day, April 25th, 1998, when I became very sick. A nearby mine accidentally spilled pollution that flowed into my clean waters, threatening my plants and animals. It was a dark and scary time. But what happened next was truly amazing. Hearing I was in trouble, thousands of people from all over Spain and the world rushed to help me. They worked day and night, carefully cleaning my rivers and helping my wildlife recover. Their teamwork showed how much people cared and proved that when we work together, we can help heal nature. My story is a promise. I am living proof of how precious our planet is and a reminder that we must all be guardians of these wild places. I stand here today, healthy and strong, to teach all the children who visit that protecting nature is protecting a home for all of us.
