The story

Genoa: The Proud City by the Sea

I am nestled between green mountains and the sparkling blue sea. My houses are painted in cheerful colors like peach, yellow, and red, climbing up the hillsides. My streets are a maze of narrow, shady alleyways where you can smell salty sea air and delicious baking bread. Ships with tall masts and big cargo containers bob in my harbor. I am the city of Genoa, and I am nicknamed 'La Superba'—The Proud One!

My story began a very, very long time ago, even before the famous Roman Empire. By the Middle Ages, around the 11th century, I became a powerful city-state called the Republic of Genoa. My harbor was one of the busiest in the world. My ships were strong and fast, and my sailors were brave. They sailed across the Mediterranean Sea, bringing back wonderful treasures like colorful spices, soft silks, and shiny jewels. I was a city of merchants and adventurers, growing richer and prouder with every ship that returned home safely.

Watching all these ships come and go inspired a young boy who grew up on my streets. His name was Christopher Columbus, and he was born here around the year 1451. He would look out at the sea and dream of sailing to faraway lands. His big dreams eventually led him on an incredible journey across the Atlantic Ocean. During this time, my wealthy families built magnificent homes called the Palazzi dei Rolli. These palaces were so beautiful that in the year 2006, they were named a special treasure for the whole world to protect.

Today, my harbor is still full of life. You can see giant cruise ships, little fishing boats, and even a pirate galleon built for a movie. I am also home to one of Europe’s biggest aquariums, where you can meet dolphins, sharks, and penguins. People still get lost in my charming old alleyways, discovering secret squares and tasting yummy food like pesto, which was invented right here. I love that I am still a place where people can look out at the sea and dream big, just like that little boy did so long ago. I am a city of stories, waiting for you to come and find your own adventure.
