The story

The Great Stone Houses

Imagine standing on a warm, sunny hill in Africa. All around you are tall, curving walls made of stone, stacked so perfectly that they do not need any sticky stuff to hold them together. They twist and turn like a long, stone ribbon, reaching high into the bright blue sky. For a long, long time, I have watched the sun rise and set from this hill. I am a city of stone, a very special place. I am Great Zimbabwe. My name means 'great houses of stone,' and that is exactly what I am. I was built with great care by clever hands, one stone at a time, to be strong and beautiful for everyone to see.

More than nine hundred years ago, around the 11th century, a group of talented builders called the Shona people started to create me. They shaped each stone to fit just right, like pieces of a giant puzzle. Starting around the year 1200, I became a very important place, a royal city where kings and queens lived. I was filled with the happy sounds of life. Children laughed in my courtyards, and people came from far away to trade shiny gold and colorful beads. There were big celebrations with music and dancing. From high on my walls, special stone birds, called the Zimbabwe Birds, watched over everyone. They were a symbol that kept my people feeling safe and proud. I was a busy, wonderful home full of life and joy.

After many wonderful years, my city grew quiet. Around the year 1450, my people moved on to find new homes, and I rested peacefully under the big African sky. For a while, I was lonely, but then new friends started to arrive. Today, visitors from all over the world come to see me. They walk along my old paths and gently touch my strong stone walls, imagining the kings and queens who once lived here. I have a very special honor. On April 18th, 1980, the country where I live decided to take my name. Now, it is called Zimbabwe. I am so proud to be a symbol of the amazing things people can build and to share my story with everyone who comes to visit me.
