The story

The Bay of the Descending Dragon

Imagine you are gliding silently on water the color of a polished emerald. All around you, thousands of giant stone towers covered in thick, green jungle rise from the sea. They look like a crowd of gentle giants sleeping under the sky. A soft mist often hangs in the air, wrapping the tops of the stone pillars in a dreamy haze and making everything feel magical and ancient. It feels like you have sailed into a secret world, a place where myths could be real. This special place is my home, and these stone giants are my heart. I am Hạ Long Bay, which in the Vietnamese language means the Bay of the Descending Dragon.

My story began a very, very long time ago, around 500 million years in the past. Back then, I was not a bay at all, but a deep, warm ocean. For millions of years, tiny sea creatures lived and died, and their shells drifted down to the ocean floor, creating thick, heavy layers of a rock called limestone. Then, the powerful forces of the Earth began to push and shift, lifting this thick limestone bed up out of the water. Once it was in the open air, the rain and the wind became my sculptors. For thousands of years, they patiently carved and shaped the stone, creating the thousands of islands and caves you see today. Long before there were cities or even farms, the first people found me. Around 18,000 BCE, people of the Soi Nhụ culture took shelter in my newly formed caves, living safely within my stone walls.

While science tells one story of my creation, the people who live here tell another, one filled with magic and bravery. They say my name, Hạ Long, holds the secret to my birth. Long ago, the early Vietnamese people were trying to build their country, but they were often attacked by invaders from the sea. The people prayed for help, and their cries reached the heavens. The great Jade Emperor heard them and sent a magnificent family of dragons down to help. The Mother Dragon and her children descended from the sky and began to spit out countless jewels and pieces of jade. The moment these treasures touched the water, they transformed into the thousands of islands that dot my waters today. These islands formed a great, rocky wall that the invaders’ ships could not pass, and the Vietnamese people were saved. The dragons loved this peaceful green land so much that they decided to stay forever, and it is said that the islands are the backs of these slumbering, protective dragons.

Through history, I have continued to be a guardian. My winding channels and hidden coves are like a maze, which has been very useful for defenders. In the year 1288 CE, a clever general named Trần Hưng Đạo faced a powerful Mongol fleet that wanted to invade his country. He used my confusing layout to his advantage, luring the enemy ships into my narrow channels during low tide where he had hidden sharp wooden stakes. The enemy fleet was trapped and defeated. For centuries, I have also been a home. Generations of people have lived in floating fishing villages, building their houses, schools, and communities right on the surface of my calm waters. Their lives move with my tides, and they have learned all my secrets, from the best places to fish to the safest harbors during a storm.

Today, people from all over the world come to see my beauty. I have been given special honors to make sure I am protected forever. On December 17th, 1994, I was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a title given to the most special places on Earth. Then, on November 11th, 2011, people around the globe voted for me to become one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. These titles remind everyone that I am a treasure. I am more than just water and stone. I am a place of legends, a protector of history, and a home. I hope that my story and my peaceful, misty waters will always inspire people to care for the incredible natural wonders of our planet.
