The story

The Golden Town of Lanterns

Imagine a place where the walls of every building are painted a warm, sunny yellow, as if they hold the sunlight even after the sun has set. Picture narrow, winding streets where no cars are allowed, perfect for a peaceful stroll. At night, colorful silk lanterns of every shape and size hang from rooftops, their gentle light reflecting like jewels in the calm waters of a river that flows through my heart. You might smell the sweet scent of incense drifting from ancient temples and hear the quiet murmur of happy voices. I am not just a place. I am a feeling of peace and timeless beauty. I am Hội An Ancient Town, a jewel on the coast of Vietnam.

For hundreds of years, I was one of the busiest places you could imagine. My story as a great harbor began in the 15th century. The Thu Bồn River, which flows through me, was deep and wide, a perfect welcome mat for big ships sailing across the sea. From China, Japan, and even faraway European countries like Portugal and the Netherlands, merchants came to my shores. They arrived with their ships full of treasures and left with their ships full of mine. I watched them trade shiny silks, fragrant cinnamon and pepper, and delicate pottery that was famous all over the world. Many of these visitors decided to stay. Traders from Japan built their own neighborhood, and so did the merchants from China. They built homes and meeting halls in the styles of their homelands, which is why my streets are a beautiful mix of different kinds of architecture. To connect their community to the Chinese quarter across a small stream, my Japanese friends built a beautiful bridge in the early 1600s. It has a roof to protect people from the sun and rain, and it still stands today as a symbol of our friendship. It is called the Japanese Covered Bridge.

But a river, like a person, can change over time. By the late 18th century, my dear Thu Bồn River began to fill with sand and silt. Year after year, it grew more shallow, until the big, heavy trading ships could no longer sail into my harbor. They had to find a new place to trade, and slowly, the world’s attention turned away from me. The bustling crowds of merchants disappeared, and the noisy harbor fell silent. For nearly two hundred years, I was like a sleeping town, forgotten by the busy world. My golden walls grew weathered, and my winding streets were quiet except for the footsteps of local families. This long nap turned out to be a secret blessing. Because no one was trying to build big, new things here, my old wooden houses, my graceful bridges, and my quiet temples were left in peace. They were perfectly preserved, waiting for the world to notice them again.

My awakening began slowly in the 20th century, as people started to rediscover my untouched beauty. Travelers came and fell in love with my peaceful streets and the stories my old buildings seemed to tell. Then, on December 4th, 1999, I received a wonderful honor. I was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This meant that the whole world agreed I was a special treasure that needed to be protected forever. Today, I am awake and more alive than ever. My streets are once again filled with happy voices from all over the world, not just of merchants, but of visitors who come to see my history. Every month, during the full moon, I turn off all the electric lights and celebrate the Full Moon Lantern Festival. Thousands of lanterns glow, and people float small paper lanterns with candles inside them on my river, making wishes as they drift away. I am a living storybook, a place where different cultures met in peace long ago. I love to share my warm, golden light and my tales of friendship with every new person who walks my ancient streets.
